How to research prospective electrical contractors for work at your home. Later this week, I'll be providing links and info to research plumbers and general contractors as well.

Every homeowner should keep this info handy!

Step 1. Use the links below for electricians to verify they are licensed to do business in Alabama.

Step 2. To verify they are licensed in your city, call the City Inspection Dept. This will also confirm they are INSURED and that's really important. BTW, these Departments encourage you to call!

Huntsville Inspect. Dept. 256-427-5331
Madison City Inspect. Dept. 256-772-5644

Step 3......I'll post tomorrow.

New outlets in the columns allows this homeowner to light the Christmas Tree without a 10ft extension cord everyone trips over. And now they can add lamps to the end tables located far from the nearest wall outlet.

I included the photo in the attic just to show that I don't work without a net.....see the 3/4 plywood cut to 2ft x 4ft to safely span the ceiling joists? I used 4 of them to safely construct a path to the column entry points in the attic. Balancing on ceiling joists for the this kind of work is just not safe and ignores possible headaches for the homeowner. Even if it's repaired, would any homeowner want the mess from a foot (at the minimum) punched through the ceiling?

Yes, lighting in your closets does make a difference. There are code restrictions that apply but there are still a wide variety of fixtures that are permitted. You can have them on an existing switch or a dedicated switch.

My favorite fixture is the 6" LED recessed for around $70.00 at your local Big Box DIY store and for the entire month of December, BPE will discount the installation (not the cost of the light fixture you choose) of any closet fixture by 15%!

I've experienced the same problem (corrosion and broken bulbs stuck in their sockets) on 3 different adventures, recently. So I've decided to include with every service call, free of charge, a 1oz. container of Bulb EZ thread l**e for light bulbs. I instruct each client to use it sparingly on all exterior bulbs and only the threads of the bulb not in the bulb socket. Using Bulb EZ on exterior bulbs is the minimum, but I also recommend it for interior bulbs as well. And remember bulb threads ONLY, NOT the socket!

Don't substitute vaseline, lip balm, soap, WD40 or any of the commonly suggested, readily available household product that you will see recommended by many DIYers and even a few electricians. There are problems associated with using these that I can tell you all about and if you want to know the chemistry and physics in detail just send me a request in an fb message. I've done the research and homework for you. For now, just know this is a great product and you can buy a small 1 ounce container at Batteries+ for $5-$6. It will last you for years and it's non-toxic and environmentally safe and works well to prevent corrosion and makes replacing bulbs much easier. You may never have a bulb break in the socket, while you're trying to remove or install one, ever again using Bulb EZ. I’m using it on all client service calls.

One more time......NOT IN THE SOCKET. Sorry, I just can't recommend any home owner putting their fingers in a socket. It's a bad habit for a home owner to start. And yes I know you can turn off the circuit breaker and verify there's no voltage at the socket with a voltmeter, but again, this is not something I'm going to recommend for the average home owner.
