MYTH: “If it isn’t leaking, it must be working.”

Not necessarily.

A backflow prevention assembly can look completely normal from the outside and still have internal components that are worn, sticking, weakened, or no longer sealing properly.

That’s why you can’t determine whether a backflow assembly is working just by looking at it. Testing tells us what’s actually happening inside the device.

A passing test means the assembly was functioning properly when it was tested — which is why water providers require recurring testing when applicable.

Imagine turning on your faucet and seeing “soapy” water come out.

That actually happened to residents in Austin, Texas, in January 2020.

Firefighters were responding to a fire and using concentrated firefighting foam. During the operation, pressure from a fire truck caused the foam solution to flow backward through a hydrant connection and into the public water supply.

Residents began noticing water that looked soapy coming from their taps.

Austin Water determined that a backflow incident had occurred. The affected area was isolated, residents were placed under a Do Not Use order, and the water system was flushed to remove the contamination.

This is what backpressure backflow can look like in the real world: pressure on one side of a connection becomes greater than the pressure in the drinking-water system, allowing something that should never be in that water to flow backward into it.

Backflow prevention can sound like a technical plumbing issue—until you realize what it is actually designed to prevent.

It helps protect the water coming out of our faucets.

What happens if my backflow preventer fails its test?

A failed test does not automatically mean the entire assembly has to be replaced.

Depending on what caused the failure, the assembly may be repairable. After the problem is corrected, the assembly can be retested to verify that it is working properly.

The exact next steps can vary depending on the assembly and the requirements of your water provider.

The important thing to remember is that a backflow preventer can look perfectly normal from the outside and still fail a performance test.

MYTH: “If my irrigation system is working, my backflow preventer must be working too.”

Not necessarily.

Your irrigation system can appear to be working normally even when there’s a problem inside the backflow prevention assembly. You usually can’t tell whether the assembly is functioning properly just by watching the irrigation system run.

That’s what backflow testing is for — checking the internal components and verifying that the assembly is performing as required.

You’re outside filling a bucket with the garden hose. The bucket fills up, so you set the hose down and leave the end submerged in the water.

Then, somewhere nearby, water pressure suddenly drops — maybe because of a water main break or heavy demand on the system.

That pressure change can create suction and pull the water in the bucket backward through the hose and into the plumbing.

That’s backsiphonage, one type of backflow.

It’s such an ordinary-looking situation — and a good example of why proper backflow protection matters.

💧 What’s protecting your drinking water?

Many people don’t realize that a backflow preventer is one of the most important devices protecting a building’s water supply.

One well-known example occurred in Columbia, South Carolina, when a homeowner noticed brown water coming from the tap. Investigators later found the irrigation system was missing the required backflow prevention device. Testing detected herbicide in the home’s water supply.

While situations like this are uncommon, they’re exactly why backflow prevention devices are required and why they should be tested annually by a certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT).

assembly. Their answer?

“We have city water.”

This can be a common misconception.

A backflow preventer isn’t there to protect you FROM
city water. It’s there to protect the city’s water FROM
your property.

When pressure drops — from a main break, a freeze,
or firefighting demand — water can reverse direction. If
a cross-connection exists, contaminants get pulled
back into the public supply. That affects your
neighbors, local businesses, and schools.

City water isn’t a reason to skip backflow protection.
It’s often the reason you need it. 💧
