Fun Fact #4

Looks fine. Might not be. 🤔

Here’s something most people don’t know:

A backflow preventer can look completely normal on the outside and still be failing on the inside.

The internal springs and seals wear out over time — silently and invisibly.

That’s why annual testing isn’t just a TCEQ requirement. It’s the only way to know your device is actually protecting your drinking water.

Don’t trust the look. Trust the test. ✅

💧 WOULD YOU EVEN KNOW? 💧

Most contamination is invisible.

A backflow preventer can appear to be working perfectly on the outside and still fail internally. The internal parts wear over time—and there is no way to know for sure without testing.

That’s why annual backflow testing isn’t just a requirement—it’s the only way to be sure your drinking water is protected.

✅ Protect your water
✅ Protect your family
✅ Stay compliant with annual testing requirements

🚨 29 people got sick. Children were among them.

In 1987, a community event in North Dakota became a public health incident when water contaminated by an unprotected cross-connection was used to prepare drinks.

The contamination had backflowed from the building’s heating system into the drinking water supply.

This wasn’t a chemical plant or industrial facility.

It was an ordinary community building.

That’s what makes this story so important. Cross-connections are often hidden. Most people never think about them until something goes wrong.

Backflow prevention exists to keep incidents like this from happening in the first place.

One unprotected connection. 29 people sick. Children included. Don’t wait until it happens in your community. 💧

PSA: Your garden hose might be a secret troublemaker. 🌿
Yep. Leaving your hose sitting in a bucket, puddle, or pool while the water is running? That’s actually a cross-connection — and if pressure drops, contaminated water can get sucked right back into your home’s supply.
Your hose. The villain nobody suspected. 😅
The more you know! 💧

Most people don't think about what's happening inside their pipes—until something goes wrong.
A backflow preventer is a simple but critical device that allows water to flow one way—into your property—and automatically shuts off the moment water tries to reverse direction.
No power. No switches. No manual operation. It just works.
Why does that matter?
When water pressure drops due to a water main break, heavy demand, or freezing conditions, contaminated water can be pulled backward into the public water supply. A properly installed and tested backflow preventer helps stop that from happening.
Many Texas properties are required to have annual backflow testing, including properties with:
✔ Irrigation systems
✔ Swimming pools
✔ Commercial equipment
✔ Multifamily properties
Not sure if your property requires testing?

24 gallons of chemicals.
One backflow incident.
More than 300,000 Texans told not to use their tap water.

December 2016. Corpus Christi, Texas.

A backflow contamination incident at an industrial facility led to a citywide "Do Not Use" water advisory affecting more than 300,000 residents. Residents were instructed not to drink, cook with, bathe in, or use tap water while officials investigated and flushed the system.

The incident involved an asphalt-emulsion chemical mixture that was believed to have entered the public water system through a backflow event.

Events like this demonstrate why backflow prevention and cross-connection control are so important. Properly installed and regularly tested backflow prevention assemblies help protect drinking water systems from contamination.
If your property has an irrigation system, swimming pool, boiler system, chemical feed equipment, or other potential cross-connections, you may be required to have a backflow prevention assembly installed and tested by a licensed professional.

💧 Got a backflow test reminder but you rent your home or apartment?
That notice isn’t yours to handle — but don’t just throw it away!

Backflow testing on apartment complexes and rental properties is the owner’s or manager’s responsibility — not the tenant’s.

Property managers juggle a lot — maintenance requests, renewals, inspections — sometimes these annual deadlines just slip through the cracks. A quick heads up from you could be all they need to get it handled. 😊

So do your part. Pass it along!
And if you’re a property manager seeing this — we’ve got you covered.
