Customer was experiencing dimming/flickering lights and occasional power loss on multiple circuits. A closer inspection revealed water damage and corrosion on the neutral bus that over time caused poor connection even though all of the terminal screws were tight. A panel upgrade solved the issues as well as prevented future ones by properly sizing breakers that were too large for the circuits they protected.

Humid/leaking basements can cause even the newest electrical components to fail prematurely. It’s important to control your home’s humidity and repair any water leaks no matter how insignificant they seem. Most electrical problems stem from years of deterioration, so even small preventative measures can have a major impact on the longevity of your equipment!

This one got a little toasty!

Receptacles can burn up like this for a number of reasons, sometimes happening quickly or over several years. Here’s a few things to keep an eye on so this doesn’t happen to you:

- Discoloration on or around the receptacle
- Plugs falling out or fitting loosely
- Receptacle loose in the wall

Problems like this can also occur when there is a loose connection on the receptacle’s terminal screws, or if the wire has been “back-stabbed” by the installer. Over time, loose connections cause arcing which will literally melt the wire away as was the case here.

While not all problems can be identified visually (this one didn’t even trip the breaker), taking note of anything out of the ordinary when using your receptacles can potentially save you big in the long run!

In this job we:

- Installed new service entrance conductors (the wires that connect your home to the power grid)

- Installed a 200 amp meter with disconnect as now required by code (this also adds additional breakers outside for future projects)

- Replaced the two old panels with a new 200 amp Leviton smart load center

- Added whole-house surge protection

- Installed a 50 amp Generac transfer switch and outdoor receptacle

For this customer we upgraded their 100 amp service to a 200 amp in order to provide additional power for an upcoming building project. We also brought things up to code by installing new ground rods and an emergency service disconnected, all within just a few hours.
