Fighting fire with fire 🔥 It might look like our crews are making the fire bigger, but there's a strategy behind it!

Using a drip torch, firefighters intentionally ignite vegetation in a controlled area to burn off fuel before an approaching wildfire can reach it. This technique, known as a burnout operation, helps create a stronger fireline by removing the vegetation that would otherwise feed the flames.

Putting in the work, even when visibility is low 🔥

Our crews are pictured here using hand tools, including Pulaskis, to dig and clear vegetation along the fireline. These tools combine an axe blade and a digging blade, allowing firefighters to chop through roots, remove brush, and expose mineral soil to create a break in the fire's path.

By removing flammable vegetation and digging down to bare soil, crews help prevent flames from spreading and reduce the chance of fire creeping through ground fuels.

A little air support goes a long way! 🚁

When fighting wildfires, helicopters play an important role in supporting crews on the ground. By dropping water or fire retardant from above, they can help slow fire spread, cool hot spots, and give firefighters valuable time to establish and strengthen containment lines.

While aerial drops are a powerful tool, the work doesn't stop there. Ground crews are essential for securing firelines, addressing remaining hot spots, and ensuring the fire stays contained.

A great example of how teamwork between air and ground resources makes a difference out on the line.

Before the work begins, it starts with being prepared 🔥

Gear checks, line readiness, and inspections are all part of making sure the crew and equipment are ready for whatever the day brings. Every detail matters before heading out to the line.

It’s more than just a long day on your feet.

Wildland firefighters can carry around 30–50+ pounds of gear while working on the fire line—including their pack, water, tools, PPE, and other essential equipment. Depending on the assignment and terrain, crews can cover several miles in a shift, often over steep, uneven ground and in challenging conditions.

Before stepping onto the fire line, the work starts in the classroom 🔥

Every new firefighter at ASI goes through training, building the knowledge and understanding they’ll need before putting those skills into practice in the field.

Classroom instruction and hands-on training both play an important role in preparing our crews to work safely, communicate effectively, and understand what’s expected when they’re out on the line.

Learn it. Practice it. Then put it to work.

Not a bad office view.. 🌲⛰️🔥

Wildland firefighting takes our crews through some incredible terrain — from dense forests and steep ridgelines to wide-open mountain views most people never get the chance to see.

The work is demanding and the days can be long, but every once in a while, you get a view that makes you stop and appreciate where the job takes you.
