These trees were locked together. I either needed to separate them from my aerial device or fell them together, so together it was. We fixed a rope in them and applied some tension with a long rope and a John Deere. Wind was blowing like the devil in the wrong direction, but we got it done with a positive outcome. Sometimes removals are interesting. I hope someone else thinks so too. Have a great weekend everyone.

We were working on Lake Abanakee in Indian Lake this week. Had a nice view of the bridge and lake through the trees. I’m happy to report the black flies seem to be diminishing. They sure aren’t done yet, but they’re nothing like they were last Tuesday. Have a great day and be sure to feed a few black flies today, while you still have the chance.

Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you for what you do and for the sacrifices you make.

I often have people ask me how I sharpen a saw. The photos don’t show how, but these are the tools. I sharpen in a bench vise and I sharpen by hand. No guide, just freehand. It took me years to master it. A man mentored me in the early days. He had been taught by the sons in a logging family. He understood. In the early days I didn’t. With small saws and short bars you can get by with poor technique and inattention the the whole picture. If you really want to learn if you sharpen well you need a 36” bar on a big saw. There, your sins are amplified and you receive immediate feedback. Guess I’ve learned well enough. I can make those big saws cut straight and true, pulling big beautiful chips as she goes. But make no mistake. It took a lot of mistakes to get me here and a lot of warn out files. Be safe and happy cutting everyone.

I am making my first attempt at nurturing plants! My home place is on Tug Hill. Dad’s people moved there around the time of the civil war. This rhubarb is all that remains from the family rhubarb patch. Had someone look for the rhubarb patch a few years ago. It was still thriving and sizable. Asked them to dig some up for me a couple weeks later and someone had beaten them to it. Stole almost the whole patch. There was a small remnant that remained. Questionable whether it would survive transplanting. It spent three years at a foster home (thank you Aaron Gadway) and was relocated to our home place last week. Hopefully my Tug Hill cross breed rhubarb will take off and we can start making strawberry rhubarb pie. I can’t believe I’m gardening. Hopefully this goes well.

Since it was snowing yesterday I thought it would be nice to post a warm weather and blue skies video. Happy Monday!

Here’s an awkward moment in the life of Kevin. This is a broken beech tree, broken 18 inches above the stump. It is wadded into another beech tree. House is 15 feet away and in line. The target tree is chained to a nearby tree so it won’t jump off the stump. There’s one rope mid stem holding the tree. A second rope higher, running to the tractor. Now for the fun part. Start pulling them apart and see if this was a good plan. It did seem to work, so I guess it was. Sorry it’s not a great video. Here’s to tree life! Have a great weekend everyone.

Life ain’t perfect, but at least I live and work in the mountains. It’s easy to forget how beautiful Indian Lake is. Happy Friday everyone. Enjoy the sunshine.

So after six years of service I decided to send my John Deere 4052 MHD down the road. It’s been a good tractor, but it was time for a new one. The good folks at Falls Farm and Garden worked with me on a trade. They have been a pleasure to work with. Pricing is competitive and they are an independently owned family business, not some big corporate franchise.

My new tractor is a John Deere 4066 MHD. I’ve driven it enough to get it off the trailer and get the grapple mounted. I’m looking forward to putting it into service. Here’s to a great 2026 season! Have a great day folks and thanks for your interest.
