📌Canadian wildfire smoke and ash will impact swimming pools in Indiana.
The ash contains phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon, which deposit into the water, rapidly deplete chlorine, throw off the pH balance, and directly introduce phosphates—the primary food source for algae.
How Wildfire Smoke Impacts Your Pool:
Chlorine Demand: Ash and organic material in the smoke create a massive "organic load". Your chlorine will be consumed incredibly fast as it works to oxidize these contaminants.
pH Fluctuation: Wood ash is highly alkaline. As ash settles, it can cause the pH of your water to rise, which leads to cloudy water and scaling.
Filter Clogging: Microscopic soot particles pass through skimmer baskets and easily clog up your sand, DE, or cartridge filters, reducing water circulation.
Does It Cause Phosphates?Yes, ash is rich in phosphorus. As smoke and ash settle on the water's surface, they dissolve and introduce high levels of phosphates.
If left untreated, these phosphates act as plant fertilizer, allowing algae to take over the pool.
Try to keep your pool covered when not in use and stay on top of your chemistry.

How the winter to summer here in Indiana has impacted so many hoosiers.

*The extreme freeze-thaw-freeze cycles—like the brutal record-breaking cold in mid-December, followed by unseasonable warmth for Christmas, and a flash-freeze in January —wreaked havoc on Indianapolis pool plumbing and pool chemistry. These swings cause underground pipes to expand and contract, creating microscopic leaks. This lets trapped water seep out or air get sucked in, compromising your winter cover and lowering water levels.

*Here is exactly how this weather creates a perfect storm for white water mold and green algae:-Chlorine Dilution & Depletion: Melting snow and rain alter the water chemistry, and the fluctuating temperatures degrade your sanitizer. Once chlorine levels drop below 1.0 ppm, algae spores awaken and thrive.Ideal Incubation: Algae and white water mold (a naturally occurring fungus) thrive when water temperatures hover in the 50 to 60°F range. The warm spikes give them the perfect incubation period before your pool opens. Circulation Dead Zones: Air leaks and failing pool seals (caused by the freeze-thaw cycles) ruin your pump's prime. Without proper filtration and circulation, mold and algae take over the shadowy corners of the plumbing lines.

*Why Later Openings (Past March) Make it Worse Warming Temperatures: Algae thrives in water temperatures above 60°F.
Waiting to open your pool means it sits stagnant while the sun and spring heat warm the water, allowing algae and mold to heavily populate. Biofilm buildup: White water mold isn't technically algae; it is a fungus-like slime (biofilm) that loves dark, stagnant environments. When left unchecked over the spring months, it attaches and breeds inside your plumbing, skimmers, walls, floors, and behind pool lights.
