Are you thinking summer hasn't even started a we already had a power storm with power loss? Read below to learn the benefits of a generator interlock on your home or office electrical panel. Amp'd Up can provide a much less expensive alternative to a whole home standby generator.
Standby generator installation is also available.

A portable generator interlock kit is one of the most practical and cost-effective ways to supply emergency power to a home during an outage. Installed directly on a home’s main electrical panel, the interlock mechanically prevents the main breaker and generator backfed breaker from being ON at the same time, allowing a portable generator to safely energize selected household circuits.

Here are the major benefits:

Safe Generator Connection

The primary benefit is safety. An interlock kit prevents dangerous backfeeding into utility lines, which can injure utility workers or damage equipment. The interlock ensures the home is connected to either:

Utility power or
Generator power

—but never both simultaneously.

Powers Existing Household Circuits

Unlike extension cords running throughout the house, an interlock kit allows homeowners to use existing branch circuits in the electrical panel. This means you can safely power:

Refrigerators and freezers
Well pumps
Furnaces and boilers
Sump pumps
Lighting circuits
Garage doors
Wi-Fi and electronics
Microwave outlets
Select kitchen circuits

The homeowner simply manages electrical loads based on the generator’s capacity.

More Affordable Than a Standby Generator

A portable generator interlock setup is significantly less expensive than a permanently installed standby generator system. It provides many of the same practical outage benefits without:

Automatic transfer equipment
Permanent gas piping
Concrete pads
Large installation costs

This makes it a popular solution for homeowners who experience occasional outages but do not want the investment of a full standby system.

Cleaner and More Professional Installation

An interlock kit creates a much cleaner installation compared to:

Multiple extension cords
Temporary power strips
Window pass-through cords

Typically, the system includes:

A dedicated generator inlet box mounted outside
Properly sized wiring to the panel
A backfed breaker with listed interlock hardware

This provides a code-compliant and organized emergency power connection.

Fast Transition During an Outage

When utility power fails, the homeowner can:

Turn OFF the main breaker
Slide the interlock into position
Turn ON the generator breaker
Start the portable generator

Power can usually be restored to essential circuits within minutes.

Flexible Generator Sizing

Interlock systems work with many portable generator sizes. Homeowners can choose:

Smaller portable generators for essentials only
Larger portable generators capable of supporting multiple circuits or partial-home operation

Some systems can even support high-demand loads with proper load management.

Maintains Electrical Code Compliance

When installed properly by a licensed electrician, an interlock kit provides a legal and NEC-compliant method of connecting a portable generator to a residential electrical system. Proper installations typically include:

Listed interlock hardware
Proper breaker sizing
Correct inlet configuration
Proper grounding and bonding considerations
Required labeling
Ideal for Storm-Related Power Outages

For areas prone to storms, falling trees, or utility interruptions, interlock systems provide reliable backup power without requiring a permanently installed standby generator. This is especially valuable for:

Preventing frozen pipes in winter
Keeping sump pumps operational
Protecting refrigerated food
Maintaining heating systems
Charging phones and communication devices
Minimal Space Requirements

Electrical Panels With The Worst Reputations
- These panels are often not covered by home insurance carriers for the following reasons.

1. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) – Stab-Lok
Most notorious panel brand
Major issue: breakers fail to trip under overload
Failure rates reported as high as ~60% in some tests
Linked to thousands of fires
NJ class-action lawsuit (2002) found they were fraudulently marketed as safe
No official recall (largely due to regulatory limitations)

👉 In the field:
This is the one that gets flagged immediately on inspections and insurance underwriting.

2. Zinsco (and Sylvania / GTE-Sylvania)
Known for bus bar + breaker failure
Breakers can weld to the bus and stay ON
Leads to overheating, arcing, and fire risk
Frequently cited as a “replace immediately” panel

👉 In the field:
You’ll often see melted bus stabs—classic sign. Replacement is standard recommendation.

3. Challenger
Not as universally condemned as FPE/Zinsco—but still problematic
Issues:
Breakers fail to trip properly
Overheating connections reported
Documented recalls (1980s + later Eaton-related issues)
Some insurers treat them as a risk factor

👉 In the field:
More “case-by-case” than FPE/Zinsco—but many electricians still recommend replacement.

⚠️ Other panels often flagged (but less extreme)
Pushmatic (Bulldog)
Not a lawsuit-driven issue
Problems:
Aging mechanical breakers
No modern replacement parts
Risk = reliability, not widespread fire history

Call Amp'd Up Electrical for a replacement or upgrade solution to these hazardous panels.
