🍂🌱 PULL UP A POT THURSDAY, LET IT ALL FALL!🌱🍂

It is officially September which means we have all collectively decided:

THAT’S ENOUGH, SUMMER. BRING US THE PUMPKINS! 😂🎃

We know, we know. It may still be 87 degrees outside. The tomatoes are still tomato-ing. The garden is still full of flowers and the mosquitoes have certainly not received the fall memo...

But mentally?

We are in a cardigan. 🍂😂

So pull up a pot, because if you’ve got fall on the brain, there are actually plenty of things you can start doing in the garden RIGHT NOW!

🥬PLANT SOME FALL VEGGIES!
Cooler weather is perfect for crops like lettuce, spinach, radishes, kale and other quick growing greens. September doesn’t have to mean the end of your vegetable garden!

🌷 START THINKING SPRING BULBS.
Tulips, daffodils, crocuses and other spring-blooming bulbs get planted in the fall. You don’t have to rush them into the ground today, but now is a great time to start planning and collecting!

🌻 SAVE THOSE SEEDS!
Before you yank every crispy flower out of the garden, LOOK AT IT! Those dried up zinnias, cosmos, marigolds and other blooms may be holding next year’s garden. Let seed heads fully mature and dry, collect them on a dry day, label them (trust us on this one 😂) and store them somewhere cool and dry.

🦋 DON’T CLEAN UP TOO MUCH.
We know the temptation to make everything tidy is STRONG, but some spent flowers, stems and seed heads are incredibly valuable to wildlife. Birds can feast on seeds, and beneficial insects may use hollow stems and plant material for shelter through the colder months. Basically a slightly messy fall garden can be a very good garden!

🌿 SHOW YOUR SOIL SOME LOVE.
Bare soil doesn’t love sitting naked all winter either. Consider mulch, leaves or a cover crop to help protect it from erosion, suppress weeds and add organic matter.

And if your garden is currently being held hostage by MURDER VINE, aka bindweed, perhaps do not till that bad boy into 47,000 convenient little pieces. Ask us how we know. 🫠😂

🍁 AND MOST IMPORTANTLY…ENJOY IT ❤️

Don’t get so busy “putting the garden to bed” that you miss this part of the season.

Watch the butterflies.
Cut a bouquet.
Pick the last tomatoes.
Save some seeds.
Let the sunflowers get weird.
Stand in your garden with a cup of coffee and admire the absolute chaos you created from tiny little seeds. ❤️

Summer isn’t quite finished.

Fall isn’t quite here.

And honestly?

The garden is pretty magical in between. 🌻🍂

So tell us, gardeners…

👇 Are you desperately clinging to summer or have you already mentally purchased 14 pumpkins and a mum? 🎃😂

ROOTED TOGETHER WEDNESDAY 🫜🌱

This week, we’re shining our Rooted Together spotlight on an organization that has been serving our community for more than a century, Rotary Club of Ironton! ❤️

Rotary is built around a pretty simple but powerful idea: ‘Service Above Self’.

And here in Ironton that has meant generations of local people giving their time, resources, leadership and talents to make our community a better place to live. From supporting young people and education to community projects, charitable giving and simply bringing people together around the idea of service; Rotary has a long history of investing right here at home.

The Rotary Club of Ironton dates all the way back to 1920. Just think about that for a second, more than 100 years of community members choosing to show up and serve Ironton! 🥹

Last week, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming members of the Ironton Rotary Club to the Common Soil Community Garden. And what was supposed to be a little garden tour turned into more than an hour of wandering from bed to bed. We talked about our community gardeners, volunteers, shared tools, free seed library, Open Door Sprouts, educational programs, partnerships, pollinators, flowers, vegetables and, naturally, the majestic corn. 🌽😂

But more importantly, we got to talk about why Common Soil exists and our belief that access to gardening, nature, education and community shouldn’t depend on how much money, land, equipment or experience someone has. They listened. They asked questions. They let us tell ALL the stories. The butterflies showed off for our guests. And it turned into one of those really beautiful afternoons that reminds us why community connection matters so much. 🦋🥹

That’s also exactly why we started Rooted Together Wednesday.

Common Soil doesn’t exist in a bubble. The things happening throughout our community are possible because organizations, businesses, schools, nonprofits, volunteers and neighbors continually choose to invest in one another.

The Rotary Club of Ironton has been doing exactly that for generations.

Thank you to our friends at Rotary for spending time in the garden with us, for your interest in what we’re growing and especially for the many years of service you’ve given to the Ironton community. ❤️

We’re proud to be Rooted Together with people who believe that when each of us contributes what we can, the whole community grows! 🌱

It’s been another good week around Common Soil. ❤️

This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Rotary Club of Ironton to our Community Garden for a tour; and what was supposed to be a little tour may have turned into over an hour of us dragging everyone from bed to bed telling ALL the stories! 🥹🌱

We talked about how Common Soil began, the community members and volunteers who have helped this garden grow, our free seed library, educational programs, Open Door Sprouts, community partnerships, shared resources, environmental stewardship and why making gardening accessible to everyone matters so much to us!

And honestly, it was one of those afternoons that reminded us exactly why we do this. The garden was beautiful, the butterflies showed OFF and we were able to share not just what we grow; but the people and stories behind it. 🦋

A huge THANK YOU to the Ironton Rotary Club for spending the afternoon with us, for listening to our stories, and most importantly; for the many ways you continue to serve and invest in our community. We loved having you in the garden! ❤️

🐅⚽️ AND THIS WEEKEND, IT’S OUR TURN TO SHOW UP FOR SOMEONE ELSE!

This Saturday, Common Soil is headed to The Tank to cheer on the Ironton High School Boys Soccer at 7:30pm!

These young men showed UP for our Community Garden this summer. They hauled, shoveled, worked beds and helped us get this space ready to grow.

And if you’ve driven past the garden lately and thought, “GOODNESS, LOOK AT THAT CORN!” These kids helped make that happen! 🌽

Community isn’t just about people showing up for us; it’s about showing up for each other. So we’re trading our garden gloves for orange and black and heading to The Tank to return a little bit of the love they gave our garden this summer. 🧡🖤

Come out, grab some concession stand nachos, enjoy a late summer evening and help us CHEER ON THE TIGERS! 🐅⚽️🌱

Because whether we’re growing gardens, growing kids or growing community…we’re better when we’re Rooted Together! ❤️🌱

🪴PULL UP A POT THURSDAY🪴
The Case of the Bindweed (aka: Murder Vine ) 🕵🏼‍♀️

Let’s talk about the part of gardening nobody puts on the pretty seed packets. Our community garden has a problem. A bindweed problem. And this stuff does NOT understand boundaries! 😂

It climbs, it tangles, it spreads underground and if you pull it without a solid plan, it has approximately 67 ways to come back and personally offend you.

So what are we doing about it?

We’re getting ready for winter and taking this opportunity to reset our beds as much as we can. That means:

🌿 Removing as much bindweed as possible; roots and all. NOT tilling! Bindweed spreads through underground rhizomes or roots. Tilling chops those roots into a bunch of pieces and each little piece can potentially produce a new plant!
🌿 Clearing out spent plants and weeds.
🌿 Deadheading and cleaning up our flower beds.
🌿 Saving seeds from the plants we actually want to reproduce! 😂
🌿 Planting a few fall crops.
🌿 Adding our fall/winter cover crop where appropriate; we are thinking oats! 🌾
🌿 And getting those beds tucked in for the colder months!

We’re not expecting perfection. Gardening is a process, and sometimes the process is just standing in a garden holding a fistful of murder vine wondering how the heck it got THAT big! 😂

But that’s one of the things we love about the community garden: we learn by doing. We try things, we make mistakes, we figure out what works and we keep growing. 🌱

Our goal this fall isn’t to make everything picture perfect. It’s to leave the garden healthier, more manageable and ready to come roaring back next spring! 🌱🍂

So pull up a pot, grab your coffee, and tell us:

What’s the one thing in YOUR garden that you have declared a personal enemy? 😂☕️

🌱 WHAT’S GROWING MONDAY 🌱

We’re starting this week with some dirty hands, some Tiger pride and a little Plant Bingo business. 😂❤️

First up; a HUGE thank you to everyone who showed up for our Community Garden tidy-up yesterday! It was an absolutely beautiful day to get our hands dirty and our garden got some love. Whether you weeded, deadheaded, saved seeds, planted, hauled things around or just stopped by to say hello; thank you! This garden belongs to our community and there is something pretty special about watching people show up and care for it together!❤️

⚽️ THIS WEEK, WE’RE TRADING OUR GARDEN GLOVES FOR TIGER GEAR!

Saturday at 7:30pm Common Soil is headed to The Tank to cheer on the Ironton High School Boys Soccer! 🐅⚽️

These kids worked HARD with us in the garden this summer and now we can’t wait to return the favor and show up for them on the field! If you’re free Saturday evening, come help us cheer them on! 🖤

🪴 AND THEN THERE’S BINGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…

PULL UP A POT THURSDAY! 🪴

Grab a pot and settle in friends because summer gardening isn’t the end of gardening season! 🍂🌱

While some of our summer plants are starting to look a little tired (and honestly, same 😂); late summer is the perfect time to start thinking about your fall garden.

Cooler temperatures can mean happier greens, fewer heat-stressed plants, and a whole new round of things to grow. Depending on the crop and timing, you can tuck in things like:

🥬 Lettuce & other leafy greens
🌱Spinach
🫜Radishes
🥦 Broccoli
🥬 Kale
🌿 Cilantro
🧅 Green onions
🥕 Carrots
🫛 Peas

And fall gardening isn’t only about planting!

This is also a GREAT time to start seed saving from some of your favorite flowers and vegetables, deadhead spent blooms, clean up tired plants, keep harvesting what’s still producing and take a few notes about what worked; or absolutely did NOT work; so future you remembers next spring! 😂

One important tip: don’t rip everything out just because it looks a little messy! Seed heads from flowers like sunflowers, coneflowers and other garden favorites can provide food for birds, while stems and plant material can offer habitat for beneficial insects through the colder months. A garden doesn’t have to be perfectly tidy to be doing important work! 🐝🐦❤️

Want to chat more about fall gardening or come get your hands dirty with us?

Common Soil will be sprucing up the Community Garden on 7th and Adams this Sunday from 1–4 PM and everyone is welcome! Stop by for ten minutes or stay the whole afternoon.

NO gardening experience necessary. Seriously. Come as you are and we’ll show you what we’re doing! ❤️

We’ll be:
🌿 Weeding
🌸 Deadheading
🌾 Saving seeds
🥬 Planting a few fall crops
🧹 Giving the garden a general end of summer spruce up

And while you’re there, you can gaze upon the absolute agricultural masterpiece that is our MAJESTIC COMMUNITY CORN, wander through the garden or spend a few minutes completing our Community Garden Pollinator Scavenger Hunt! 🐝🦋🌽

Gardening is always more fun when we do it together! So pull up a pot, plant something for fall, save a few seeds for next year and if you’re free Sunday, come grow with us! 🌱❤️

🌱 ROOTED TOGETHER WEDNESDAY 🌱

This week we’re showing some love to one of our favorite local places to wander around saying, “Ohhhh I absolutely need that!” 😂❤️

We’re talking about Cardinal Wishes Antiques and the wonderful Patricia Coleman!

Patricia is one of those people who makes supporting local VERY easy. She’s kind, fun, endlessly supportive of her community and she just so happens to own an antique store packed with treasures!🥰

And listen… gardeners AND antique stores are a dangerous combination! We have found PLENTY of goodies at Cardinal Wishes that immediately became plant vessels because around here if it can hold dirt, there is at least a 93% chance we’re putting a plant in it! Old crocks, baskets, pitchers, tins, funky containers; we support giving old things a new life! 😂🪴

And when we’re talking about our favorite antique dealer, we can’t forget Patricia’s second shop, Coleman’s Mercantile, just across the river in Russell! So if you love hunting for unique vintage finds, you officially have TWO places to get yourself into trouble. 😂

Cardinal Wishes is a proud round sponsor of our Fall Plant Bingo! And Patricia won’t just be sponsoring from the sidelines; you’ll catch her there slinging Bingo cards like the absolute boss she is! 👑

Support like hers helps us continue offering free programs, putting resources into our community and finding more ways to connect people through plants. That’s exactly what ‘Rooted Together Wednesday’ is all about!

🍂 AND WHILE WE HAVE YOUR ATTENTION… SAVE THE DATE!

Cardinal Wishes and Treasures From The Valley are hosting Pumpkins on Vernon on:

🎃 Saturday, September 26
⏰ 9:00am-4:00pm

FOOD! MUSIC! VENDORS! AND MORE!

Basically, a whole fall day on Vernon Street and you KNOW we’re here for that! 🍁🧡

🚨🌱 OUR BINGO ROUNDS NEED ADOPTED, FRIENDS. 🌱🚨

Plant Bingo is BACK October 8th and we are already dreaming about another packed room, ridiculous amounts of fun and tables FULL of plants! 🪴😂

Butttttt… we have a tiny problem.

We have 15 rounds of Bingo and only TWO are currently sponsored. 😭

That means 13 rounds are still looking for someone to love them!❤️

For just $50; your business, organization, family or a group of plant loving friends can sponsor an entire round of Plant Bingo!

🌿 Your sponsorship includes recognition on our social media!
🌿 Recognition on Plant Bingo promotional materials!
🌿 A BIG shout-out during your sponsored round!
🌿 And the warm fuzzy feeling of knowing you’re helping us keep this little community growing! ❤️

And where does that $50 actually go?

Straight back into The Common Soil Collective’s free community programming; our seed library, children and adult gardening programs, community garden projects, supplies, plants, seeds, educational activities, community events and all the other slightly chaotic things we dream up to get people growing! 🌱

We work really hard to keep our programs free and accessible to our community and fundraisers like Plant Bingo; and the businesses and people who support them; are a huge part of how we’re able to do that!

Last Plant Bingo was SOLD OUT, and you all made it very clear that you wanted another one. So WE’RE GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT! 😂

🎟️ Tickets go on sale September 1st!

But RIGHT NOW, we’re looking for 13 more round sponsors!

💚 $50 sponsors one full round.

Scan the QR code on the flyer, message us or email [email protected] to claim yours!

Now somebody please adopt these poor bingo rounds before I start naming them. 😭🪴😂

13 ROUNDS LEFT, WHO’S IN?! 🌱❤️
