Rover ants, specifically Brachymyrmex patagonicus, are a common nuisance pest in Texas, particularly in urban areas. They are small, ranging from dark brown to pale blonde, and are known for their tendency to invade homes, especially kitchens and bathrooms, during hot, dry summer months. While not dangerous as they don't bite or sting, their large numbers can be a significant annoyance. They don’t have colonies as large as odorous house ants, but can be difficult to get under management because they are very picky eaters and sneak into very tight entry points, and with no visible “mounds” they just rove on in. We can help with these and other types of ants andi other types of critters as well. Call (972) 445-7300 to discuss treatment options

Hey friends, meet the cicada killers!
You’ve probably spotted these large, rust-colored wasps digging neat tunnels in sunny, bare patches of soil. Despite their intimidating size—up to 2 inches long—and booming buzz, cicada killers are solitary. Females excavate burrows to provision each chamber with a paralyzed cicada for her developing young. They’re fascinating to watch, especially during peak activity in late June and July.

Why they’re actually garden allies
Though their name sounds fierce, cicada killers help keep cicada populations in check, preventing tree damage when cicada emergences run rampant. They’re also gentle toward people: males can’t sting, and females only do so if mishandled. Unlike aggressive social wasps, cicada killers focus entirely on provisioning their nests and pose minimal threat—no neighborhood BBQ has ever been crashed by a wasp stinger here.

Coexisting with backyard burrowers
If you’re curious rather than concerned, leave their burrows undisturbed and admire them from a safe distance. For high-traffic areas, lightly water or rake over old tunnels to discourage return visits next season. If a nest is truly inconvenient, a professional can humanely relocate them. Otherwise, sit back, sip your iced tea, and enjoy a free, live nature documentary right in your yard.

P.S. Did you know cicada killers can fly up to 30 mph and have been observed traveling half a mile from their nest? If you’re into macro photography or citizen-science apps like iNaturalist, they make for epic summer subject matter!
