The 2025 Ithaca Native Landscape Symposium will be held in person on Friday, March 21st at Cinemapolis, Ithaca, NY But, how do we do these things?

ABOUT 2022
INLS 2022will be held virtually on Friday, March 4th and Saturday, March 5th in the comfort of your own home or office. While we wish we could all be together, we are excited about this years speakers and we definitely look forward to all being together in 2023 at Cinemapolis. Participants will be able to view the presentations and earn their Professional Development Hours for 3 months

after the live conference, until June 21, 2022, the Summer Solstice. MORE ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
We live and work in a changing world. Technology, industrialization, and growth, plus natural and unnatural factors we don’t even understand, are changing the ecology of our entire planet, even as we are learning how to understand the changes. Elaborate tapestries of thousands of species, including humans, must be always evolving if they want to survive. And yes, landscapes are changing too—natural landscapes in the wild, built landscapes in our cities and towns, and even the ways we, as professionals and caretakers of landscapes, view them. All of us who work with natural or built landscapes strive to improve the world around us. How do we succeed when the target keeps moving, or the game keeps changing? How do we make the world better and more beautiful through landscapes? We help by learning more about the delicate but resilient natural world, which informs design. We grow by exposure to the work of other like-minded professionals in other regions of the country. We discover the surprising adaptability, or vulnerability, of species as they respond to unforeseen changes in their habitats and environment. INLS will focus on the role of native species in our landscapes, and how native plants, birds, pollinators, landscapes and environments are doing in our dynamic and rapidly changing world.

Invasive non-native shrubs can have serious, although not immediately obvious, negative impacts on birds. Amanda will explore the full range of impacts on some of the most dominant invasive non-native shrubs on our native and breeding bird populations in the northeast.

INLS 2025 featured speaker: Linda Rohleder Ph.D. : VolunteersGrowing Native Plants for Restoration Projects

Volunteers with the Wild Woods Restoration Project are growing native plants for restoration efforts in local parks across the Hudson Valley. By using local ecotype seeds, they are helping to preserve the region’s genetic diversity and restore habitats in these parks. Dr. Rohleder will explain how the project organizes volunteers to grow plants at home and will discuss the concepts and challenges they face with local ecotype seeds and sustainable growing practices. Since 2022, the project has engaged over 300 volunteers and cultivated tens of thousands of plants. This initiative highlights the powerful impact volunteers can make through collective action.

Featured Speaker INLS 2025: Uli Lorimer: Working with the process: Techniques and Strategies to Grow with Mature Landscapes

Setting things in motion is often the easy part of garden-making, and watching your vision unfold can be rewarding and unexpected. Taking cues from how plants behave in nature is a great start, but sometimes their behavior changes in cultivation. Mature landscapes pose a particular challenge as the moving pieces have been in motion for a long time. This talk will explore techniques and strategies for allowing plants to express themselves, mature, and change, all while not sacrificing design intent. The dynamism of plantings and plant communities should remain an enriching part of garden maintenance, not a source of frustration and headache. Understanding the push and pull of landscapes over many seasons helps inform timely interventions while affording space for serendipity and competition.

Building on the community outreach effort led by the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, MVVA is transforming LaSalle Park into a world-class park that celebrates the life of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. The 100-acre site is one of the largest waterfront parks in Buffalo and is located where the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers meet Lake Erie, only ten minutes from downtown. Although the existing park’s sports facilities, event pavilion, “Barkyard” dog park, pool, and skate plaza are beloved by the community, they are underused and isolated by a highway. The seawall, fields, and other infrastructure are reaching the end of their lifespan, and the park experiences flooding after extreme weather events.
