Workplace design starts long before furniture and finishes — it starts with how people actually work.

At HOLT Architects, "Places to Work" is one way we think about impact, alongside how people live, learn, and heal. In practice, that means every office project starts with the same questions. How do teams move through a day? Where do they need quiet focus, and where do they need to interact with each other? What has to flex as the organization grows or reorganizes?

Good workplace design isn't a style. It's a process built around the people who'll actually use the space.

With more than 63 years of healthcare design experience, a deep understanding of New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) processes and procedures, and a tested team, HOLT knows how to create healing environments through smart design. Here's what that looks like in practice:

Evidence-Based Design - Creating healthcare environments that are informed by research and data to improve patient outcomes, enhance safety, and optimize overall well-being for patients and staff.

Patient-Focused Environments - Prioritizing the needs, comfort, and well-being of patients by creating spaces that promote healing, reduce stress, and encourage positive patient experiences through thoughtful design.

WELL Building & LEED - WELL Building prioritizes human health and wellness, while LEED focuses on sustainability and environmental impact. Both systems work in concert to create spaces that are healthy for the earth and its occupants.

Planning for Change - Designing flexible and adaptable facilities that can accommodate evolving technologies, practices, and patient needs, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency in the face of continuous advancements.

Small Projects, Big Impacts!

Quay Thompson, AIA, NCARB, LEED-AP, Jennifer Baldwin, and Elliot Felix will be speaking at the annual conference of the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) to discuss how—faced with tight resources—those responsible for an institution's physical environment need to extend the impact of small capital projects. Their session offers real examples and takeaways for getting big impact from small projects while strengthening student experience and belonging. They'll share a practical playbook and describe how it was used to plan three small and mid-sized projects at St. John Fisher University. These projects ensured focused, affordable interventions that supported community, belonging, experiential learning, and academic identity. You will leave with a repeatable framework to help you plan small capital projects that advance institutional goals by making meaningful progress even in times of uncertainty and limited resources.

Attending the conference, please look for the presenters and introduce yourself. Not attending, but want to learn more? Please reach out.

Recently, members of our HOLT team had the privilege of participating in the United Way of Tompkins County's annual Day of Action, volunteering with the incredible team at the Advocacy Center of Tompkins County. As architects and designers, we spend much of our time helping organizations create spaces that support their missions. Today, we had the opportunity to support organizational mission in a different way—working side by side to make a positive impact in our community.

Our whole group was deeply impacted by the opportunity. Learning more about the Advocacy Center’s work was both inspiring and humbling. Their commitment to creating safety, healing, and hope for individuals and families throughout our region is truly remarkable.

Thank you to United Way of Tompkins County for organizing this meaningful event and to the team at Advocacy Center of Tompkins County for welcoming us. We're grateful for the chance to contribute and to learn more about the important work happening in our community every day.

HOLT’s Kelly Maher AIA and Paul A. Levesque II were thrilled to attend the grand opening celebration of Hudson Headwaters Health Network's Malone Family Health medical office building in Malone, NY. Hudson Headwaters Health Network partnered with HOLT to develop this new 13,550-square-foot outpatient primary care facility. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Hudson Headwaters sought a modern healthcare environment to expand access to primary care services and create a welcoming, community-centered patient experience. The design vision focused on creating a medical office building that feels approachable and residential in character, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood while maintaining a strong connection to the adjacent hospital campus. Natural light and views to the outdoors were prioritized throughout the facility to enhance the experience of both patients and staff and support overall wellness.

For more than 63 years, HOLT Architects has been designing environments that strengthen communities across New York State and beyond. Founded in 1963, our firm has grown through a commitment to thoughtful design, lasting client relationships, and a belief that architecture has the power to positively impact how people heal, learn, and live.

From healthcare and higher education to housing and community-focused projects, our history is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and service. While our tools and technologies have evolved over the decades, our core mission has remained the same: creating enduring, sustainably designed spaces that improve quality of life for the people who use them every day.

As we look toward the future, we remain grateful for the clients, partners, and communities who have trusted us along the way — and excited for the projects and relationships still to come.
