No party like an Aspen party!

Our annual summer backyard party at the boss’s house is one of our favorite traditions, and this year’s was one for the books. Jorge Aguirre and Jorge Flores even surprised Big Steve with a couple of personalized gifts that felt especially fitting during Aspen’s 50th year.

Nothing beats kicking off the work boots and enjoying a great afternoon together. Thanks to Beach Shack food truck and the NNJ crew for making sure nobody went home hungry.

By this time of year, we’re used to getting calls from homeowners asking the same question: “Is my tree dying?” And after everything New Jersey trees have dealt with so far this year, we’re hearing it even more.

We had that cold snap in April, followed by extreme heat, ongoing drought conditions, and round after round of summer thunderstorms. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that trees are showing some stress. The harder part is knowing what’s a normal response to the conditions and what may be a sign that something else is going on.

Brown leaves, early leaf drop, thinning canopies, and dead branches are all worth paying attention to. But none of those things, on their own, necessarily mean a tree is dying.

Steve Jr. was having such a good time learning, connecting, and catching up with others in the industry at the ISA 2026 Annual International Conference in Detroit last week that he didn’t take many pictures. 📸

He did, however, come back with plenty to share after a few great days surrounded by arboriculture professionals from around the world.

Always good to keep learning, no matter how many years you’ve been in the industry!

Despite its name, the Japanese pagoda tree (Styphnolobium japonicum) is not actually native to Japan.

Also known as the scholar tree, this large shade tree is native to China and Korea and is one of the few trees flowering in August. Its creamy white to pale yellow blooms are followed by unusual seed pods that resemble seaweed, kelp, or even jellybeans on a string.

It needs plenty of room to grow and a location where its seasonal flower and fruit drop will not become a nuisance, but in the right setting, it can be an impressive late-summer feature in the landscape.
