This past summer, Baxter Construction Services completed a masonry restoration project at the historic Pump House Art Gallery in Yoctangee Park, Chillicothe, Ohio. Built in 1881, the Pump House now serves as both an art gallery and an event center for the community.
Over time, the building’s foundation stones had begun to crumble, and large portions of the brick walls were severely eroded and required replacement. Our team carefully removed and replaced the damaged foundation stone and brick wall sections, preserving the historic character of the structure while significantly improving its overall stability and longevity.
Yoctangee Park is currently undergoing major improvements, including the addition of new structures , amphitheater and the restoration of the Old Army National Guard Armory , a building that holds personal significance for us. Baxter Construction Services is proud and fortunate to be preparing to take part in this important restoration project as well.

We recently finished Phase Two of the Baxter Building in Jackson, OH. This project is a total renovation of a downtown building once on the demolition list. The building was built in 1886 by Benoni Gray , the founder of what would later be called Globe Furnance. Gray was a pioneer in Jackson's Iron Industry which is still symbolized yet today by Jackson City School's mascot "The Ironman". A 1886 edition of the Jackson Journal retells the story of the building being considered one of the finest in town because of its decorative brickwork and decorative cast iron columns on the front of the building that were preserved.
Phase One involved removing and installing a new floor and roof system/extensive structural repairs on the front of the building and masonry restoration.
Phase Two has been establishing businesses downstairs and roughing-in for apartments upstairs. Holy Grounds Coffee is now open for business, stop by and see what Cloe has to offer! BesTitle has moved from their location across town and is now also open. They are leaders in their business and just recently expanded to have locations in four states!
Phase Three will be the construction of four loft style apartments upstairs. I anticipate completing them in early 2026. Every nice town has a nice downtown and I believe our town of Jackson is moving in the right direction and I'm glad to be part of it.

Congratulations Cloe!

Congratulations Cloe!

The book of Isaiah reads, “The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.” Such a passage is appropriate for a faith-based business celebrating its beginnings in a building resurrected through determination ...

2024- BCS would like to thank the Bill & John Martin Families for hiring us to restore their downtown Jackson building. Their building, located on Main Street in Jackson, Ohio has been in the Martin family since originally being built in the late 1800's. BCS was hired to restore the masonry, restore the 2nd story wood windows, and replicate the original wooden storefronts.
While removing the existing storefronts we uncovered Solar Glass Prisms that were used pre-electric to project sunlight further into the rear of the storefronts. We actually were able to save, restore, and re-lead the glass and reinstall them in what was the C&J storefront.
Thanks to Mr. Robert Ervin who found multiple news articles on the building, the building owners, and even about how the glass prisms found were considered advanced technology during that time period.
Preserving downtown buildings is an important part of preserving local history and community pride. Every nice town has a nice downtown and BCS is proud to be taking part in preserving and improving Jackson's Downtown.

2023-BCS would like to thank the Vanmeter Family for entrusting us with their restoration project on the heritage rich family farm. The farm was founded in 1801 by Issac Vanmeter who served in the revolutionary war/ as a Magistrate in Virginia and served as a member in the state convention that drafted the Federal Constitution of the new America. The Vanmeter Farm is on the National Register for Historic Places.
BCS disassembled and rebuilt one stone wall that was failing by labeling and reinstalling each stone back into its original location with some stone weighing up to 375lbs. We also restored all the masonry facades.

THE WHISTLER BUILDING STRUCTURAL REPAIR PROJECT
BCS recently completed a project on a Historic Downtown Chillicothe Building that in its own right was historic. In the fall of 2021, BCS started the first of three phases on the Whistler Building that sits on the corner of Paint and Water Streets in Chillicothe, OH. In 2022, we were nearing completion of the full scale masonry restoration project which included 100% Re-Tuckpointing the exterior brick walls/ Masonry Cleaning/ the rebuilding of many brick walls inside and outside of the building and adding a elevator shaft.
Nearing the completion of our project General Contractor RL Waller Construction discovered a large section of the building facing Paint St had hand hewed wood columns and headers supporting the second and third floor walls that dated back to its original construction in 1855. The wood had rotted over the decades and at one point in time, steel was added to help support the rotted wood but now that had rusted and also needed replaced. Instead of opting for another temporary repair, the building owner, Mr. Ed Kunzelman opted to replace the structural components with modern structural steel which ultimately will preserve the building for another century to come. So, BCS was hired to design and carry out this large task of lifting and supporting the building while removing and replacing the wood columns and beams and previous steel repairs with new engineered steal columns and beams that would sit on newly poured basement walls. Throughout this entire process it was priority in keeping all the historic details that made this building worth salvaging.
48.75 tons of oak cribbing were hand stacked and unstacked. 28.35 tons of temporary steel was set and a custom jacking system was installed and used to lift up and hold the 87.12 tons of the Whistlers masonry wall load while 4 months of work proceeded underneath it to rebuild its foundation. Four winter months...
I'm proud to have been part of this project and can't say enough about my men who made it happen -Dan, John and Mike. Thanks Mr. Kunzelman for the work and what your doing for the City of Chillicothe. Thanks Bob Waller for entrusting us with this scope of the project. Thanks to the Chillicothe City Police and to the city workers who worked with us on solving issues to keep the project moving forward including shutting down the streets as needed for public safety and moving signs etc. Most of all, Thanks to the good Lord above.
For all your Buildings Restoration or Structural Repair needs call BCS. We do it right the first time.
