The best direction to lay your new flooring…

Depends on several factors, including the room’s shape, natural light, and structural elements. Here are some general guidelines:
1. Parallel to the Longest Wall – Laying flooring parallel to the longest wall in the room creates a sense of length and openness. This is a common choice for rectangular rooms.
2. Perpendicular to Floor Joists – If installing hardwood or engineered wood, it’s best to lay the planks perpendicular to the floor joists for added structural support.
3. Following Natural Light – In rooms with large windows or lots of natural light, laying planks in the direction of the light flow (parallel to the main source of light) can help minimize the appearance of seams.
4. Continuity Across Rooms – If you’re installing flooring in multiple rooms, maintaining the same direction throughout creates a cohesive and continuous look.
5. Hallways and Entryways – In narrow spaces like hallways, planks should typically run lengthwise to create a more visually appealing flow.

The thickness of luxury vinyl flooring matters for both performance and comfort.

1. Durability & Wear Layer
• The overall thickness (measured in millimeters) affects how sturdy the floor feels underfoot and how well it holds up in high-traffic areas.
• A thicker plank usually comes with a thicker wear layer, which adds better resistance to scratches, dents, and daily wear.
• Thinner planks (like 2–4 mm) are fine for low-traffic spaces, while thicker options (5–8 mm+) are better for busy households with kids and pets.

2. Stability & Sound
• Thicker vinyl is more rigid and can hide minor imperfections in the subfloor better than thin vinyl.
• It tends to reduce noise, feeling more like real hardwood underfoot.
• A thin floor can sound hollow or “clicky,” especially if installed over uneven surfaces.

3. Comfort Underfoot
• A thicker core provides a softer, more cushioned feel when walking.
• This matters in kitchens, living rooms, or any space where you’re standing for long periods.

4. Resale & Perception of Quality
• Many homeowners and buyers associate thicker vinyl with higher quality.
• A 6–8 mm plank with a 20 mil wear layer looks and feels more premium than a thin 3 mm product.

✅ Rule of thumb:
• 4 mm with 12 mil wear layer → Good for apartments, low traffic.
• 5–6 mm with 12–20 mil wear layer → Standard choice for most homes.
• 7–8 mm with 20+ mil wear layer → Best for high traffic, kids, and pets.

🚩 Red flags to look for when hiring a contractor:

• They give you a price without properly inspecting the job
• No license or insurance
• Asking for a full upfront payment before work starts
• Everything is verbal with no written estimate or contract
• They avoid questions or rush you into making a decision
• Prices seem “too good to be true”
• No reviews, references, or past project photos
• They claim they can “do everything” perfectly
• Poor communication or constantly changing details
• They skip talking about prep work or possible hidden issues

A good contractor explains the process, communicates clearly, and doesn’t hide potential problems. Cheap work often becomes expensive repairs later.

Save these steps:

1. Prep the stairs
•Remove old material, clean everything, and make sure steps are flat and solid. Fix any squeaks.
2. Measure & dry fit
•Each tread and riser is slightly different—measure and test fit before gluing.
3. Install risers first
•Glue them in place and keep them straight and flush.
4. Install treads
•Apply strong adhesive evenly, set the plank, and press firmly.
5. Install stair nose
•Most important part—use the correct stair nose and secure it tightly with adhesive.
6. Check alignment
•Keep edges clean, straight, and consistent from step to step.
7. Let it cure
•Avoid walking on stairs for at least 24 hours.

Key tip: Never install LVP as a floating floor on stairs, always glue it down.

Why quarter round is often installed

LVP is a floating floor, meaning it needs a small expansion gap (usually about 1/4 inch) along the walls. Quarter round is installed to cover that gap.

Installers use it because it:
•Hides the expansion gap
•Is quicker than removing and reinstalling baseboards
•Protects the edge of the flooring

When you DON’T need quarter round

Quarter round can be avoided if:
1.Baseboards are removed first
The flooring is installed, leaving the expansion gap, and the baseboards are reinstalled to cover the gap.
2. You install new baseboards after flooring
3.Your existing baseboards already cover the gap

This method usually looks cleaner and more modern because you only see the baseboard.

When quarter round is recommended

Quarter round is usually the best option when:
•You don’t want to remove baseboards
•The existing baseboards are thin
•You need a quick install
•The gap is larger than expected

Don’t choose this padding…

Cork might sound premium, but it can cause issues:

Cork is made from natural material, it’s also porous which is why it can absorb moisture.

* Absorbs moisture → can trap water and lead to mold or subfloor damage
* Too soft → compresses under weight, weakening the locking system
* Creates movement → leads to gaps, squeaks, or instability over time

Why choose IXPE padding

IXPE is made from closed cell foam

* Moisture-resistant → doesn’t absorb water
* Stable support → keeps planks locked tight
* More durable → holds shape over time
* Good sound control without sacrificing strength
