Last week, we were honored to receive a S.T.A.R. Award for craftsmanship from at the annual Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association. The award was for a historic tile roof in the San Marco neighborhood of Jacksonville that we renovated. Here is a little more of the story:
The small home was originally roofed with a flat clay tile that was lifted and relaid sometime in the 1970s, to the best of our knowledge. Several ongoing leaks and a multitude of broken tiles made it necessary to reroof.
The owner desired to keep a clay tile roof, as the majority of the homes in San Marco have. After a period of research, they decided on a Spanish S tile in a custom color blend.
We knew the old tiles were mortared in place, but when we started to remove the tiles, we found that some areas of the roof were actually built up with up to 2 inches of rock hard concrete. Crowbars and jackhammers were employed to break up the tough areas, leading to daily trips to the dump with tons of debris.
Beneath the old roof, the decking was mostly intact, though there were several areas that needed to be repaired. Once this was done, the surface was covered with peel and stick tile underlayment.
The focal point of the roof is the partial turret over the front door. For this portion of the roof, every tile had to be trimmed to taper towards the peak in the center. This was made more difficult by the uneven deck surface.
With a lot of planning and cutting, it all came together nicely. The turret was topped with flashing and a mortar cap, and finally, a small finial.
This new roof not only functions better, it also improves the look of the house and maintains the neighborhood aesthetic. It's small but proud--kind of like us.
Thank you to our colleagues at for the recognition, and to our employees and manufacturer/distributor partners who helped make this project a success.
