Survival and microclimates. Mother Nature has a way of surviving the extreme temps and weather. Here you see a Mourning Dove taking advantage of a microclimate providing liquid water on a day when them air temp was about 4 degrees F, well below freezing. Yet due to the microclimate, the snow on the cover of this Aquascape Inc. spillway bowl melted to provide a water source to be taken advantage of. As of this morning, things have changed and now the space is covered with a few inches of snow with more to come.
This scenario is similar to what bappens in our ponds during the winter. The warmest water is at the bottom of the ponds, at 39 degrees F. If we do not disturb this water, and mix it with the cooler temps, out Koi and other fish in the pond will be able to survive.
