Gardening with Gordon I'm a lifelong plant enthusiast who enjoys both native plantscapes and planned gardens. Yeah, I dig plants.

Late yesterday I saw an Eastern box turtle near the edge of the yard. It stayed in a fairly small area for at least 30 minutes, so I suspected it was a female searching for a good place to lay and bury her eggs. This morning I investigated the area but found no evidence of a nest having been dug. What I did find was this lone egg on the ground, with the turtle chilling out in the woods maybe 20 feet away. Still no evidence she'd dug a hole, so I brought the egg back to the house. It's now lightly covered by loose soil in a large pot in the yard, hopefully still viable. I guess by late summer I'll know for sure.

One of our summer-blooming trees is starting to put out flowers. Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) is native from the top of the state into the upper part of the Coastal Plain, along the western edge and even into the Florida panhandle. Beloved by bees, sourwood nectar makes wonderful honey for beekeepers willing to make the effort to collect it at the right time. In addition to the lily of the valley summer flowers, the fall color is wonderful.

Hostas are starting to happen. At least, the ones the deer haven't pruned.

A lonely volunteer petunia shows itself on a breezy spring day. You never know what might pop up in an unexpected spot.

This is the lacecap hydrangea known as "Blue Billow." Except in one of our beds it always blooms pink...because some earlier homeowner filled that area with marble chips from a local quarry, and over time soil pH spiked dramatically. Would take a lot of excavation to change it back to normal for our area. Fortunately, this pink is also nice.

"O isami" is a beautiful Japanese maple. It's starting to go red with more direct sun exposure, but if it really starts to burn I can always move it into more shade. This is the big advantage of containers vs. in-ground locations.
