The following is a briefing from NWS Blacksburg, as of Wednesday, June 17, 2026 4:00 AM.

Overview: Concern for strong to severe thunderstorms Thursday, mainly during the afternoon and evening. Main threat from the storms will be damaging winds. Localized flooding is a secondary threat mainly over the WV mountains.

Threats: Damaging Wind Gusts and Localized Flooding


Location: The entire region with the greatest potential for damaging winds along and north of the VA/NC border. Localized flooding threat more over the mountains.

Timing:
• Mainly impacting Thursday afternoon and evening hours.
Impacts:
• Damaging wind gusts may cause downed trees and power lines, isolated power outages, and potential structural damage.
• Localized flooding could lead to small streams over-topping their banks leading to road closures.

The following is a briefing from the NWS Blacksburg office as of Sunday May 24, 2026 6:00 AM.

Threats: Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms over the next several days could cause localized flash flooding in urban, low-lying, and flood-prone areas.

Location: Far western mountains today. Most of the area on Monday. The entire area Tuesday through Wednesday night.

Timing:
Today through Wednesday night
Overview and Impacts:
Heavy rainfall from multiple days of showers/storms could lead to localized flash flooding.
Heavy rainfall rates: One to three inches per hour possible in the stronger storms or where multiple storms pass repeatedly over the same locations.
Urban flooding: Ponding of water on roadways, flooding of low-lying, paved, and poor drainage areas.
Small rivers and streams: Rapid water rises taking small rivers and streams out of their banks, especially near low water crossings.
