A smaller renovation budget doesn’t mean you can’t make a big difference. It just means you have to know where to spend it.

Sometimes the smartest move isn’t replacing everything. If your existing cabinets are in good shape, refinishing, refacing, updating the doors or swapping the hardware can completely change the kitchen—and leave more of your budget for the parts of the home that actually need the investment.

Good remodeling isn’t about spending the most. It’s about spending in the right places.

The remodeling process isn’t always pretty. There’s dust, demo, unexpected decisions, and plenty of in-between stages that don’t look anything like the finished vision.

But that’s the process. And when it’s done right, the end result makes all of it worth it.

Not every set of cabinets can—or should—be updated the same way.

Before deciding to reface, replace doors or change hardware, you have to know what you’re actually working with. The materials and construction of the existing cabinets determine what can be changed without creating problems down the road.

Sometimes an update makes sense. Sometimes a full tear-out is the better investment.

That’s why we look at what’s behind the finish before making the call.

The pretty stuff comes later. First, we make sure the house works the way it should.

We’re on site in Midtown with Polar Bear Jacks, taking this home from 9 inches of blown-in insulation to 15 inches before we move on to the work inside.

Not every part of a remodel makes the final reveal, but the work behind the walls—and above the ceiling—matters just as much.

Turns out, old houses have more than a few stories hiding in the walls.

In the 1920s, builders worked with what they had—including horsehair, which was commonly used to help reinforce plaster.

Nearly a century later, we’re opening up these walls and getting a firsthand look at how they did it.

Pretty cool… once you get past the fact that there’s horsehair in the walls.
