Sycamores and maples are really struggling in this brutal Tulsa heat. They’re in survival mode, dropping leaves early and showing stress. To help them, deep watering is key. You need to soak the soil about twelve inches down, not just a quick surface spray. The best way is to move your hose slowly around the drip line, where the branches end. Jared Peters from GrienGo Lawn and Landscaping notes that Oklahoma’s trees are shedding leaves weeks early this August, driven by a flash drought and record heat.

Many trees are changing color or dropping leaves months ahead of schedule. This is a survival response where trees conserve moisture by reallocating resources. However, leaves turning brown and staying on the tree signal severe distress, meaning the tree has essentially given up.

Sycamores, maples, and elms near water are hit hardest, while oaks and hickories fare better. Younger trees are especially vulnerable.

To help, apply mulch around the base and water deeply to saturate the soil. The drought has been particularly brutal this summer, with little rainfall and temperatures consistently in the triple digits.

Soil moisture levels have dropped to historic lows across much of the state. Trees respond by going into survival mode, shutting down non-essential functions to preserve what little water they have.

This early leaf drop is nature’s way of protecting the tree’s core. Without intervention, many trees may not survive the winter. Homeowners can make a real difference by providing consistent deep watering.
