As you head out the door this morning, check your gas tank. Take a few extra minutes to prepare your car for the extreme temperatures headed our way. Keeping your gas tank near full will help avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines.

**HOW YOU CAN PREPARE**

Some schools are closing already for the next 2-3 days.

Wind chills tonight will hit -10 to -30 north of Springfield.

Check your car battery and antifreeze. Fill your gas tank up. Have a survival kit should vehicle failure occur.

Turn your furnace up 2-4 degrees. Don't be surprised if house temps fall and are unable to keep your home warm.

Let your water drip to prevent water pipes from freezing. Know how to turn off the water should a pipe break.

Check on elderly. If furnace fails than a weather related medical emergency can quickly occur.

Limit outdoor activity. Do not go outside exposed for any more than 5 minutes maximum. Frostbite will develop rapidly.

Do not inhale the air through your mouth. Extreme cold dry air will cause health problems with those who have respiratory problems. Breath through a scarf and your nose.

Limit travel. Try to limit stress on your vehicle. All schools should be closed WEDNESDAY north of Springfield.

Water main breaks could occur. Do not be surprised if water pressure falls in the occurrence of one.

Wednesday could be a day that makes the history books.

These temps could be deadly and historic. The state of Illinois hasn't seen these temps in decades. We never imagined making a map this cold ever. This is not hype, this is reality. Do not underestimate these temps.
