Downfalls to Concrete Seawalls that are made to look like Rock Seawalls.

Anchor Rod Deterioration

Prolonged exposure to water elements can cause fasteners and anchor rods to deteriorate causing the seawall to fail. Warning signs for this include seawall misalignment and outward movement. To understand if the anchor rod is causing seawall failure, it needs to be exposed fully from the anchor block to seawall cap.

Seawall Cap Failure

Exposure to water elements for long periods of time can cause the steel used for reinforcing the concrete seawall cap to corrode, causing it to expand. This causes the development of cracks and as the steel continues to expand and corrode, cracks become larger eventually breaking off large pieces of the seawall cap. This loss of concrete and exposing of the corroded reinforcing steel weakens the cap significantly. This is evident due to large cracks running the length of the cap or misalignment of the wall. However, perpendicular hairline cracks, also known as shrinkage cracks, are typical in concrete.

Loss of Berm in Front of the Sea Wall/ Insufficient Panel Pe*******on

This causes the wall to move outward at the bottom. Sheet wall piles can develop horizontal cracks due to excess loading. As a result the reinforcing steel is exposed to water, further weakening the sheet piles.

Poor Maintenance

Seawalls require maintenance and upkeep to check for the above issues before they become horrific issues. Lack of proper maintenance can result in corroding and decomposition of your wall.

NOW WITH A ROCK SEAWALL INSTALLED, ALL OF THOSE ABOVE ISSUES ARE ELIMINATED

You can kiss those steel anchor rods goodbye!
The base of your wall will consist of boulders, that will lock all your smaller rocks that follow up behind into place. We’ll start by laying down our base boulders and follow up with layers of rock to butt & lock into place.

Colorations & Sizing

Rock Seawalls come in a variety of colors & sizes. Most people will stamp the concrete to give it that rock style look. Why would you stamp when you can have the real thing?

Eco-Friendly
The best part of Rock Seawalls is the Eco-Friendliness. Rock Seawalls won’t pollute the waters that all of us have come to love & enjoy. Our walls are constructed from only natural materials. You read that right! Only natural materials that our Earth has had since the beginning of time. Now more than ever pollution is at an all time high. Here is your chance to help make a difference for the future generations that will follow in our footsteps. Another added bonus if you love fish. When breeding season begins & fish start to move closer to the shorelines to make their beds to lay eggs. Once those eggs hatch it gives marine wildlife a place to live while they grow & protect them from most predatory fish in the water. If you love fishing from your pier or simply just watching the fish in the water you know what that means!

Property Values
You can expect to see great turn outs within your properties value. Adding a Rock Seawall will do far more than just protect your shoreline. With estimates coming in with increases of 15/20 percent who wouldn’t want a Rock Seawall to protect there property & home?

Maintenance

Rock Seawalls do require maintenance just like any other. The bright side to the maintenance of Rock Seawalls, our maintenance is simple to where you don’t need to call a professional out every year. As a homeowner you don’t want to be out in the water snorkeling around your steel beams checking for all of the issues stated above. Rock Seawalls are the simplest to maintain. All it takes is 5-10 minutes to check for cracks or broken rocks. If you do come across either, all you’ll have to do is simply bring in a new rock to replace the broken one. Our walls will stand the test of time to where our counterparts will only last for 20 years without the proper care.

The customer on this job was having Nuisance animal issues! They dug a hole under there pre existing wall and made their way all up to the foundation of the home. Thankfully in there case this home was a already planned tear down to open up their lake frontage to their home across the street. We came in & redone the existing rock wall that was already there and rebuilt around the existing concrete wall. Thankfully now they won’t be having a nuisance animal issue anymore! Now if your wondering what that random step was for. Rocks were installed outside of the pre existing concrete to help beef up the shoreline. To help prevent the deterioration of the concrete. Before the rocks were installed there were multiple cracks in the pre existing wall. The rocks will now act as a barrier when waves are coming in from sport boats to help prevent further cracking.

Living on a body of water has many advantages. You can go fishing, boating, or just enjoy the natural beauty of the area around you. However, living on a body of water also means you are vulnerable to damaging elements. This includes erosion, flooding, and pests looking to invade your property.

One crucial way to PROTECT your shoreline is to install a Rock Seawall. The wall will be made of various sizes of rocks packed together to run across your shoreline. Your wall will then act as a barrier to defend your shoreline from the water to prevent erosion of your property!

ADVANTAGES OF A ROCK SEAWALL

1. Rock Seawalls Protect Against Erosion.
The rock used to protect your property helps stabilize areas with high rates of erosion. Erosion, which is the gradual destruction of something, creates flooding issues. River and lake erosion weaken your shoreline and open you up to a lot more problems. These problems can result in a great amount of damage & be extremely costly. The rocks used will absorb the flow and motion of water. If there is no motion of water hitting your shoreline, the shoreline won’t break down. Most seawalls protect against erosion, which is when the motion and current of water slowly strip away at your property and environment, but none do it as well as Rock Seawalls. Rocks will act as an energy dissipator, which means the energy from the waves is absorbed by the rocks. Some erosion control methods simply deflect the waves. Now with Rock Seawalls, the energy is not sent somewhere else. That wave energy, which could cause harm elsewhere along your property, goes away when the waves hit the rocks. Since the rocks are placed along the shoreline, they become the first defense against the current. Erosion can happen from a variety of sources, including:

Watercraft wake
High winds
Stormy weather
Ice and shifting temperatures
Runoff
Loss of vegetation and trees

2. Rock Seawalls Will Keep Out Unwanted Pests!
Muskrats are one of the leading causes of property damages to lake properties, even properties protected by Concrete barriers. They will dig under the concrete to make their way into your property, in turns to making the concrete wall weak, which could lead to some serious damages. Luckily with a Rock Seawall installed, when they go to dig under the rocks to get in the base boulders will slightly shift to prevent them from coming in!

3. Rock Seawalls Are Extremely Easy to Maintain
An important aspect of owning a seawall is proper upkeep. Maintenance for a Rock Seawalls requires annual inspection. If you check the rocks for breaks or cracks at least once a year, then the seawall should stand the test of time. Unlike concrete barriers that only last for 15-20 years. You also want to check on the rocks after major storms or weather-related incidents. Replacement of your rocks is also easier then your Concrete counterpart. Rocks are individually placed, when one rock starts to wear down, you only have to replace that one. Once concrete slabs start to develop cracks you’ll need an engineer to come out & your maintenance costs could lead to outstanding amounts.

4. Rock Seawalls Are Eco-Friendly
While it will deter animals such as muskrats from tunneling through your property, the natural exterior of Rock Seawalls also promotes eco-friendliness. With this being more of a eco-friendly earth material compared to a concrete mixture that has to be mixed together and poured. The rock placement protects vegetation. Plants can grow in between the rocks for a more natural look. Marine wildlife can also nest in the rocks to create homes, which only adds to its natural appeal.

5. Rock Seawalls Will Last for A Long Time
If you keep up on the annual maintenance of your rock wall, then it will work for a lifetime. Your rocks are designed to be durable and long-lasting. That means that while proper upkeep is important, you can rest knowing that your Rock Seawall will have a lifespan far longer than any of us!

6. Rock Seawalls Will Enhances Your Property
With Rock Seawalls coming in with a natural look. Unlike a concrete seawall, Rock Seawalls will blend into the environment. The individual rocks give off a natural look that improves the aesthetic beauty of your property and home.
Now if that isn’t good enough. It also has the benefit of increasing property value by protecting your shoreline. When it comes time to assess your property values, it will play a big role. Your property will be measured based on its overall appearance, and the natural look from Rock Seawalls adds to it. Rock Seawalls act as a natural barrier between your property and the water. Even though it is protecting the shoreline, it also protects your home as well. Water leaks and flooding can occur when there is no barrier, that can begin to get inside your home and do some serious damage. This barrier gives your home a better sense of security, as well. Therefore, the investment of putting in a Rock Seawall will pay off if you ever decide to sell your home. With estimates of increasing your value by 15-20%.

Living on a body of water such as a lake, river, or pond has immense benefits. Don’t let the disadvantages such as weather and erosion keep you from enjoying your property to its fullest potential. Rock Seawalls provides a natural, eco-friendly, time-saving solution to protect your home.

They are not a DIY project, but the professionals at Shields Rock Seawalls & Construction are ready to jump in and give you a hand!
