January is here and it is time to dive in, or in this case, cannonball into the new year! Speaking of cannonballs, a tree that is sure to make a huge splash is our January Plant of the Month, the Cannonball Tree.

This tropical beauty is known for its enormous, vibrant flowers that burst forth in an explosion of color and varies from rose pink to red. Each flower blooms for one day but produces a desirable fragrance and unforgettable appearance.

As its name alludes, the Cannonball Tree produces large, hard-shelled fruit the size and shape of a cannonball. Its fruit are even said to create a sound resembling a cannonade as they bang together on windy days. The fruit and flowers emerge directly from the trunk and large branches from vine-like stems up to 6 feet long that dangle down the tree in a whimsical display. A canopy of large textured leaves provides an excellent shade of green above the mesmerizing events underneath.

The Cannonball Tree should be placed out of the way of foot traffic and outdoor seating areas to avoid the hard fruit as they fall, but in clear sight to not miss its unbelievable attributes. Start your new year off with an explosive addition to your landscape with the Cannonball Tree this January. Happy New Year!

Its creepy and its kooky, mysterious and spooky, it’s all together ooky...it’s our October Plant of the Month, the Spider Aloe! The Spider Aloe has an appearance even the Addams Family would desire, but don’t let its formidable appearance deter you from its ornamental qualities. With its blue-green leaves, it provides an excellent pop of color. These fleshy leaves reach out like long spider legs in an attractive rosette arrangement. The leaves are pointed at the tip with toothed margins, but no reason fright because this plant does not bite. The pointed tips and teeth are rather soft to the touch and give the plant a unique appearance and added texture to the landscape. Another reason to scream about the Spider Aloe is its flowering qualities that give a taste of fall color. Tall stalks containing clusters of orange-red tubular flowers rise above the main body of the plant in a fantastic display.

The Spider will produce new rosettes of leaves from the base of the old ones, creating a spreading mass well suited as a groundcover. In time, these new growths will greatly multiply and mound the plant up to 3’ tall. As a stand-alone plant, it makes a great addition in a landscape container. This plant is also low maintenance and resistant to xeric conditions. You don’t need to be bewitched to see the striking qualities of this plant. Use the Spider Aloe for a wickedly wonderful addition to your landscape this October.

The 4th of July has past, but that doesn’t mean the firework show has to be over. Our July Plant of the Month, the Dwarf Bottlebrush, can light up your landscape with a dazzling display of flowers as red as a rockets glare.

This low growing shrub will produce intriguing flowers off and on throughout the year but are most abundant in warmer months. These vivid flowers have long bristle-like stamens that give them the look of a bottlebrush, hence its name.
