Meet Michael Balkema, a self-described "Swiss Army knife" of an employee at Best Way Disposal. Michael’s multifaceted role is beneficial to understanding how the company works together as a whole. Currently, he helps Best Way implement software and supervise the operation of the Miller Road Transfer Station.
Michael’s journey in the family business began at a young age. He started as shop help at Balkema Excavating and worked there until he was moved to a pipe crew. He started off his pipe crew experience by holding a stop sign, but by the end of his time there, he was a Lead Pipe Layer for sewer, storm, and water main. After completing college, Michael joined Best Way Disposal in sales, marking the beginning of his ever-evolving career in the waste management side of the business.
Michael’s work philosophy is simple yet profound: do the best job possible with any responsibility assigned. He is passionate about learning every aspect of the business, always aiming to improve the experience of customers and colleagues. Michael appreciates the family dynamic within the company, valuing the wisdom and experience of long-term employees. He thrives on the variety that the family business offers, which continuously fuels his growth and development.
Outside of his professional life, Michael enjoys spending quality time with his wife. Together, they share a love for travel and exploring new cuisines. Michael enjoys continuously tweaking his recipes, trying to make each dish a little better than the last. He also enjoys staying active through workouts and has recently taken up golf.
