Before skid steers, loaders, and hydraulic grapples, loggers relied on one simple tool—the Peavey.

Invented in the 1850s by blacksmith Joseph Peavey, this long wooden handle with a sharp steel spike and pivoting hook gave one person the leverage to roll, turn, and position massive logs that would have been impossible to move by hand.

Before chainsaws, loggers climbed onto springboards—wooden planks wedged into notches cut into massive trees.

Standing high above the ground, they used axes and two-man crosscut saws to cut above the tree's swollen base, saving hours of hard work.

It was dangerous, demanding, and required incredible skill.
