We demo’d this rotting wall to put in a boulder wall supporting a steep grade and 10 natural steps. The boulders were based lightly and placed on the bedrock 12”-2’ below demo grade. The e48 handled the 2000-3,000 lb bottom two boulders with ease. Railroad tie retaining walls AKA cancer walls are cheap walls that last 1/4 the time of proper block or stone walls and contain creosote, a known carcinogen. The soil was replaced and the plants will quickly remediate the soil this season. Please call us to Demo and install a stone wall at (913)660-2420

Slipped tracks, digging on flat on a hill, and slinging 6” ledge like it’s flagstone. This was a fun subcontract job we still got done on time. Email us your project pics to [email protected] to get the conversation started

If you’ve got an area you dont like mowing/managing/mulching yearly we’re here for you!! This area was mostly miscanthus (Asian ornamental grass). The area was mulched yearly (2-4” had built up). *After removing 5-6cubic yards+ (think 5 truck beds of mulch) we planted mostly meadow/prairie species to create a matrix planting of grasses and wildflowers. Call us to turn your area into something alive and functional! (913)660-2420

As we head into fall it’s nice to take note of the late season blooms combined with the subtle color changes. The color brown is one we really take for granted- take a second and look at how the backdrop of brown enhances the more popular colors that give us energy. I’m righting this on a gloomy, wet day which will make the next sunny day even more special

After/Befores of a lush sedgey (think grass, but not really, an entirely different family of plants) shade garden. This was previously a dry-moist lawn. We got a chance to use black granite boulders, which provide a great backdrop. The garden is lightly raked in the fall, leaving plenty of leaves to highlight the boulders and keep home for caterpillars to sleep under :)

We picked flagstone, as pavers would need a more technical wall setup to ensure a quality, long lasting walkway here. Instead of a wall, we chose a planted rockery, reusing native limestone, and interplanted the joints with Antennaris neglecta (prairie p***y toes). This plant will welcome the hot shallow soil and fill crevices well.

At the home base, this has been a great learning meadow with an arrangement of taller plants (most of our plantings are 1-3’ tall). I planted experimental annuals, new perennial additions, and aggressive perennials. The garden has been a blaring example of practice what you preach- I sparsely planted this as seen by pictures following.. the amount of maintenance work needed has been 2-3x more due to the lack of planting density that our customers are given. **Plant densely people!!!**

Happy Independence week- the world can feel a bit crazy sometimes, but it is easy to find our base when we remember that soil, water, INSECTS, plants are the glue that holds this country together. Which makes them a PRIORITY. And that is why this LLC plants primarily (95%+) midwest native plants- the midwest has some extraordinary plants and I wouldn’t want to design with any other goal in mind. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Here I was given the opportunity to redo the pollinator garden for the Lake Quivira garden club Design, Project Manage, Train volunteers (they were amazing), and deliver all the plants. Here are the photos that tell that story. It felt great coming back to the plants thriving in a community i’m very close to.

I wanted to highlight Hydrangea arborescens (Wild Hydrangea). By far my favorite shade shrub and it is in most of our shade-part sun designs. Here it is paired with switch grass (panicum virgatum) and downy/tall skullcap (scutellaria incana) on this shady east side garden.

Rain day/sunny day pictures (after/before planting) of a Part shade/full sun revamp we planted fall ‘24. The customer did the yew removal and left the downspout extension for us to pipe through the boulder wall. The sedge texture with the boulders is my favorite part of this design!

Happy Memorial Day! It is an honor to remind Americans to use AMERICAN PLANTS.
These midwest plants here are: filtering water, improving soil, providing nectar for pollinators (‘merican bees n butteflies heck yeah), and acting as host plants for these pollinators (no caterpillars, no butterflies).

>This a micro-prairie recreation we planted in Oct of 2023. It was one of those jobs where the homeowner has been mulching for years. We pretty much always haul off the 2-6” of mulch that builds up. Does mulch break down? It sure does.. into pretty rough soil, more on that in future posts. We’ve enjoyed building soils and butterfly habitat on this sunny hillside site!
