Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners

Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners We answer questions about lawns, vegetables, flowers, trees and landscape maintenance. The Annemary Vogleweid flower garden was already there.

The Extension Master Gardeners program began in Wyandotte County KS in 1997. Our original demonstration gardens were in the courtyard of the former County Annex at 94th and State. When that property was sold, the demonstration vegetable garden was established at the Agriculture Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs. In the years since, additional demonstration gardens have been added, including the turf

demonstration plots at the Ag Hall, and pollinator demonstration gardens at both the Ag Hall and the Turner Community Garden. Our Master Gardeners are very much into youth education, with many programs conducted by MGs at the Turner Community Garden and the Ag Hall, and various other programs conducted throughout the community. We also provide speakers on gardening topics to area organizations wanting to learn more about gardening. If you'd like a youth program at one of the gardens, please contact Lynn Loughary, county extension horticulture agent, at 913-299-9300. Training to become a certified master gardener is provided each fall. For more information, please call 913-299-9300

Did you know? August is a great time to divide irises and daylilies! If your perennials are looking crowded or blooming less than they used to, late summer is a great opportunity to give them a refresh before winter.

To divide these treasures:

⛏ Dig up the plant clumps, gently separating healthy sections with their roots attached. A hori-hori gardening knife is particularly efficient with this job.

🌱 Replant divisions in a sunny location with well-drained soil.

💧 Water the divisions thoroughly and keep the new plants consistently moist while they establish.

Dividing not only helps rejuvenate older plants but also gives you more flowers to enjoy or share with fellow gardeners!
