💧 **A PLUS POOL FACT OF THE DAY** 💧

# # # 🧪 CYA: When Is It Too High?

**Cyanuric Acid (CYA)** is often called chlorine stabilizer or conditioner. Its job is important—it helps protect chlorine from being rapidly broken down by sunlight.

But when it comes to CYA, **more is not always better.**

☀️ **How does CYA get too high?**

Many stabilized chlorine products, including **trichlor tablets and dichlor shock**, add CYA to the water every time they're used. Chlorine gets consumed, but the CYA remains behind. Over time, the level can continue to build.

⚠️ **Why does high CYA matter?**

As CYA increases, a higher free-chlorine concentration is needed to maintain effective sanitation. If chlorine isn't adjusted accordingly, you may experience:

• Recurring algae
• Difficulty maintaining proper sanitation
• Increased chlorine requirements
• Water that looks clear but isn't being sanitized as effectively as it should be

💦 **Can you just add a chemical to lower CYA?**

In many situations, the most practical and predictable way to significantly reduce excessive CYA is to **replace a portion of the pool water with fresh water**. How much water should be replaced depends on the current CYA level, the desired level, and the pool's overall water chemistry.

⚠️ **Important:** Never drain a swimming pool without considering groundwater conditions, pool construction, weather, and the condition of the pool surface. A full drain is not always necessary—or advisable.

At **A Plus Swimming Pool Services, LLC**, we look at the complete water chemistry rather than treating one number by itself. Proper chlorine, CYA, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, temperature, and **LSI balance** all play a role in maintaining healthy water and protecting your pool.

💧 **A PLUS POOL FACT OF THE DAY** 💧

# # # ☀️ Hot Weather Can Change Your Pool Chemistry Faster Than You Think!

During the Texas summer, your pool is working overtime. High temperatures, intense sunlight, heavy swimming, rain, and debris can all increase **chlorine demand**.

As water temperatures rise, chlorine can be consumed more quickly. UV rays from the sun also break down chlorine—especially when the pool's **cyanuric acid (CYA)** level isn't properly maintained.

🏊 **More swimmers = more chlorine demand, too.** Sunscreen, body oils, sweat, dirt, and other contaminants all have to be oxidized and sanitized.

Here's something many pool owners don't realize:

**Crystal-clear water does NOT always mean properly balanced water.**

A pool can look beautiful while the chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, CYA, or overall **LSI (Langelier Saturation Index)** is moving outside its ideal range. Improperly balanced water can eventually contribute to algae, scaling, staining, plaster deterioration, and equipment problems.

🌡️ **During periods of extreme summer heat, regular water testing and proper chemical balance become even more important.**

At **A Plus Swimming Pool Services, LLC**, we don't just look at whether the water is clear—we monitor the chemistry and balance our service pools using the **LSI** to help protect the pool's interior and equipment.
