W**d of the day:
Bindw**d
• Vining habit, with extensive root system
• Very persistent
• Shades out lawn
• Will climb on nearby flowers and shrubs

Solution:
The best way to get rid of bindw**d is to cut it off at soil level. Don't bother pulling it up; it will just sprout wherever you tore the roots (and you will. It's impossible to get all of the roots out.) By continually cutting it off at ground level, and doing it as soon as you possibly can, you will eventually starve the plant and it will die. Be patient! You will have to do this several times, but it will work.

W**d of the day:
Dandelion
• Persistent & appears in early spring and continues through summer and fall, or year-round in warm climates
• Will adapt height to escape mowing
• Will invade a thin, stressed lawn

Solution:
Keep them from spreading! Remove dandelions before the flowers form seed heads or mow the puffballs with a grass catcher and collect the seeds.
You may choose to pull them up by hand or try using a chemical control with 2,4-D it's the most effective dandelion killer that is safe for lawns. It is a selective and systemic post-emergent w**d control. Late spring and fall is the best time to use 2,4-D to kill dandelions

W**d of the day:
Dallisgrass
Appears in summer, but grows year-round in warm climates
• thrives in low, wet areas
Solution:
This clump can be taken out of a Bermudagrass using MSMA as per label directions. Residents that have St. Augustine will have to use other, less effective methods. If you have a sharp shovel you can dig it out or you want to spot spray this w**d with a non-selective herbicide containing 41% glyphosate.

W**d of the day:
Annual Bluegrass
Light green, cool-season annual grass
• bunch type or ‘clump’ growth habit
• numerous seeds, especially in spring, making it very noticeable in the lawn
• dies out during the heat of the summer
• new seeds begin germinating late summer
• found throughout the U.S.
Solution:
Apply crabgrass preventer before annual bluegrass begins germination in late summer

Tip of the day:
Mowing Height?
The proper mowing height depends primarily on the type of grass you have. The general rule of thumb for the Green Industry is to never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mowing. Mowing too short effects your lawn by causing the grass to use stored food and nutrients to re-grow the food producing leaf blades. During periods of heavy stress, this can result in damaging turf loss. In addition, mowing too low or scalping your lawn can produce overly thinned or bald patches, which make it easier for w**ds to become established. Frequent mowing will also keep the length of clipping to a minimum and help eliminate thatch buildup. It is a common misconception that grass clippings cause thatch buildup. Actually mowing only 1/3 of the blade with each mowing produces smaller clippings, which decompose quicker. Small clippings, especially those from mulching type mowers are actually beneficial to your lawn by helping to replace the turfs nitrogen. Grass clippings can contribute as much as 25% of your turfs nitrogen requirements.

Tip of the day:
After a very heavy rain you may need to replenish nutrients. Having heavy water runoff can carry nutrients from the soil. Make sure to replenish these nutrients with fish emulsion or an organic all-purpose fertilizer. (The natural foods last longest in the soil).

Tip of the day:
After all the Rain put your gloves on and take advantage of the soft ground!!

With Spring Break this week it's a great time to have the kids compete for who can find the most w**ds or who's area wins for looking the best after a set time frame, etc.

Pull w**ds after it rains!!! Dry soil only allows you to pull up the top of the w**d, but damp dirt makes it easier to pluck the entire plant shaft from the ground.

Tip of the day:
Still..Rain Rain and More Rain!!!
Keep an eye on emerging w**ds. W**ds love to pop up soon after a storm. The sudden charge of moisture to the soil will encourage w**ds to spring up almost overnight. Put down some type of mulch to prevent w**ds and to help ease soil erosion.

Tip of the day:
Rain Rain and More Rain!!
PREPARE for slugs and snails. They were beginning to appear before all this rain and now, they'll be out in full force.... (We recommend Slug Magic--an all natural but very safe product). Apply it now! Eliminate possible slug or snail hiding places. Slugs and snails love damp places that have hiding areas. Remove any boards, stones, or other items that are laying around in or around the garden.
