This week we practiced on staying familiar with pump operations and water supply using our Engine 22.

We also practiced with a new hydrant connection called a Hy-conn. This connector allows us to connect to a hydrant for water supply even faster reducing time when seconds count.

This months firefighter highlight

Mike Childs, Firefighter / EMR

Mike joined the Keewatin Fire Department in April of 2019. He has always liked helping people and wanted to do it on a higher scale by bettering the community he’s lived in his whole life. After joining the department, he discovered he really enjoyed it and the role model he gets to be for his kids, family, and friends. He feels that hard work isn’t always worth a paycheck but the fulfillment of helping others is what makes it worth it.

Near-critical fire weather conditions are expected this afternoon & early evening. Highs in the 70s/80s, gusts to 20 mph, and relative humidity as low as 22% mean fires could spread easily away from Lake Superior. Exercise caution today.

Nearly three dozen Minnesotans have already died in fires this year, and it’s only May.

They were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends and so much more.

Take steps today to protect yourself and your loved ones:
• Test and check the batteries in your smoke alarms.
• Create and practice a fire escape plan for your household.
• Keep the exits in your home clear.
• Never leave cooking, candles, smoking materials or other sources of fire unattended.

These small steps can save lives. Don’t wait until a tragedy strikes close to home to take action.
