I HATE 21-0-0, " But Neil Sperry said ".... Pardon all the run ons. Y'all, I'd never claim to know more than the legend Neil, but I saw in the paper the other day where he talks about using 21-0-0 ammonium sulfate for a quick surge of growth. I HATE, HATE this approach and here is why, 1st, I'm committed to the organic and hybrid organic route but also it's cheating and when has cheating ever landed you anywhere good (ask my cheating ex wife). Yes, 21 double 0 is super cheap (around $15 a bag), Yes it's made Ammonium nitrate as it's food source which technically, is good stuff because the N is a form the plant can use right away but that's like going out to dinner, ordering a great meal (let's say your favorite) and having someone else chew it for you, what's the fun in that. Yes, it works very, very quick but again it's cheating and it's not good for the grass long term. The sulfur content is way to high which messes with the soil, ph in the soil (pool owners get this one),Think about it like going out for chicken wings and getting 3 wings and a truck load of celery. it's a salt which hardens the ground..... I could go on and on and on but odds are you've stopped reading already.
Is there an application for 21? Yes. If your soil is well balanced and healthy and your lawn is balanced and well fed, then yes go for it. However, if your lawn looks kinda like your neighbors (at least yours is not that bad)? Then run to LMS and Pick up one of there HUC, or full organic products.
If you want very quick results vs good long term (all the other landscapers out there) then 21-0-0 is for you. that said I'd go with the 33-0-0 the have at LSM ( more N -33 and way, way less sulfur).
Hey but Neil said.
