As the mainland begins to experience warmer temperatures, the island remains noticeably cooler. This is due to the lingering ice pack surrounding the area, which keeps our temperatures approximately 10°F to 15°F lower than those on the mainland. In addition to the cooler weather, the island is experiencing a 3-inch precipitation deficit. This deficit is the result of reduced snowfall during the winter months and the drought that persisted throughout last fall.
While there was some rainfall last week, it was insufficient to compensate for the lack of precipitation over the past six months. The total snowfall accumulated this winter was about 13 inches. It's important to note that the moisture content of snow affects how it translates to rainfall; generally, 10 inches of snow is equivalent to 1 inch of rain. If spring remains dry, mowing activities on the island may be delayed.
At this time of year, the primary concern among cottagers is the anticipated start date for the ferry service. Although predicting an exact date is difficult, the prevailing rumor in the village suggests the ferry may begin operating around March 23. Ultimately, only time will reveal the actual schedule. Most residents are content to wait until April for regular ferry service to resume.

On Sunday, October 19th, the area experienced notable weather conditions, including strong winds and a significant rainfall event. The total precipitation recorded for the day was 1 inch.
More recently, on October 22nd, the weather intensified with stronger winds coming from the west-southwest. Gusts reached up to 50 miles per hour, and an additional ¼ inch of precipitation was measured.
Despite these recent rainfalls, the region continues to face a precipitation deficit. For the year, there remains a shortfall of 3 ¾ inches compared to normal levels.
The area also experienced a Seiche effect, which caused a noticeable drop in water levels along the coast. In some locations, the shoreline receded by as much as 30 feet from its usual position.

During the last 24 hours, a total of 0.75 inches of rain was received on Kelleys. Although this amount is appreciated and any precipitation is welcome, it is important to note that the area remains in a rainfall deficit of more than 4 inches. The weather forecast for the next 10 days indicates a zero percent chance of precipitation. This extended dry spell will likely have further implications for local conditions. Due to the ongoing lack of rainfall and the existing deficit, it seems probable that the mowing season will end earlier than usual this year.

Today, something quite unusual is happening on the island. Water is falling from the sky, and this event has left everyone puzzled. It is unlike anything we have experienced since September 1st, and there is a sense of uncertainty as we try to make sense of it. No one seems to know what to think about this unexpected situation, and it has sparked curiosity and confusion among us all.

On September 24th, in the afternoon, the area received another 0.25 inches of rain. This brought the total rainfall for the week to 0.65 inches. The additional precipitation is expected to help the grass recover, green up, and start growing again. However, according to current forecasts, no more rain is predicted for the upcoming week. As a result, mowing may resume, but only as necessary and depending on conditions.

Overnight on September 23rd, we received 0.4 inches of rain. This event marks the first measurable precipitation since September 1st, highlighting a prolonged dry period for the area. Although the mainland experienced rain on Monday, those showers did not reach the island. Observations from Port Clinton and Cedar Point confirmed rainfall in those areas, but the island itself remained dry. Due to the lack of rain, we have been pausing mowing operations. The dry conditions have made it difficult to maintain regular lawn care activities. Unfortunately, these dry spells are common for the island during the fall. For instance, last year, rainfall ceased on July 20th and did not return until late September, further illustrating the typical weather trends experienced here.

The larva of the Trombiculidae mite is coming to Kelleys Island: Chiggers.
There are 4 basic stages in their life cycles: Eggs, Larvae. Nymph (3 stages) and Adult.
Only the larva is called Chiggers and only this stage of the mite will “bite.”
When larvae pierce the skin, the digestive enzymes in their saliva, which are the same salivary secretions that break down cells and cause the surrounding tissue to harden. Since these arachnids are so small, you will not feel the puncture, but you will feel the side effects. The wounds will be small red dots that will itch.
Chiggers do not reside under the skin. They act more like a common tick. Once fed, they drop off the host. The host is any mammal. Yes, they will feed on animals.
Chiggers are temperature sensitive. Eggs will begin to hatch when the ambient temperature reaches 60°F. Keep in mind, a few days above 60°F will not necessarily hatch eggs if the nighttime temperature goes below 60°F. Larvae will die when temperatures drop below 42°F
On the island, larvae are usually active mid-June and again in mid-August. However, since it has been a cooler spring, their process may be delayed. We will be monitoring the night time temperatures to determine the best time to treat for Chiggers.
Please let us know if you would like us to treat your property for Chiggers.

5/8/25 – Monday morning we had another 3/8” in our rain gauge. Tuesday was overcast with no wind, so no evaporation of water from the soil. We were able to get out yesterday to mow, but most had to be skipped as there was a lot of standing water. Today is overcast, and currently there is a system heading to Kelleys with more rain. We will be mowing on the weekend. Ground temperatures are still below 55⁰F, so herbicides are not affecting the weeds. We will keep re-spraying until the weeds are under control.
