As the mainland begins to experience warmer temperatures, the island remains noticeably cooler. This is due to the lingering ice pack surrounding the area, which keeps our temperatures approximately 10°F to 15°F lower than those on the mainland. In addition to the cooler weather, the island is experiencing a 3-inch precipitation deficit. This deficit is the result of reduced snowfall during the winter months and the drought that persisted throughout last fall.
While there was some rainfall last week, it was insufficient to compensate for the lack of precipitation over the past six months. The total snowfall accumulated this winter was about 13 inches. It's important to note that the moisture content of snow affects how it translates to rainfall; generally, 10 inches of snow is equivalent to 1 inch of rain. If spring remains dry, mowing activities on the island may be delayed.
At this time of year, the primary concern among cottagers is the anticipated start date for the ferry service. Although predicting an exact date is difficult, the prevailing rumor in the village suggests the ferry may begin operating around March 23. Ultimately, only time will reveal the actual schedule. Most residents are content to wait until April for regular ferry service to resume.
