Is your tile telling you there’s a problem underneath?
Before the foyer transformation I shared earlier, the first step was figuring out why the original tile was failing.
A few warning signs to watch for:
1️⃣ Cracked grout — especially when it keeps coming back.
2️⃣ Hollow or loose tiles — potentially indicating poor mortar coverage or loss of bond.
3️⃣ Movement underfoot — tile needs a solid, properly supported substrate.
4️⃣ Failing edges or transitions — another reason to take a closer look.
On this project, the old tile came out, I discovered the substrate had crumbled to gravel; Replaced and properly prepared new cement board, and the new floor went down on a solid foundation.
The finished tile is what you see. The prep underneath is what makes it last.
