IT STARTED AS A SLOW DRAIN...
At first, it didn’t seem like a big deal.
Maybe it was just buildup. Maybe something went down the drain. Maybe it would clear on its own.
The sink was slow. Then the toilet made a strange gurgling sound. The shower took longer to drain than usual.
It was inconsistent—which made it confusing.
Some days it seemed fine. Other days it didn’t.
Until it wasn’t fine anymore.
That’s usually when we get the call.

WHAT WE OFTEN FIND
From a plumbing perspective, those “inconsistent” issues are one of the biggest clues.
When multiple fixtures start acting up—and especially when the problem comes and goes—the cause is often not inside the home.
It’s in the main sewer line.
And one of the most common causes we see is tree root intrusion.

HOW ROOTS GET IN?
Roots don’t need a large opening.
They enter through:
• Small cracks
• Loose joints
• Aging pipe connections
Once they find moisture, they continue to grow.
Inside the pipe, they begin to:
• Catch debris
• Expand over time
• Restrict flow
What starts small eventually becomes a blockage.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO REMOVE ROOTS?
Timing matters more than most homeowners realize.
Late Fall Through Early Spring (Best for Prevention)
This is when we recommend being proactive.
During this time:
• Trees are dormant
• Root growth slows
• Removal is more effective
• Regrowth is easier to manage
This is the ideal window to address roots before they become a problem.

SPRING AND SUMMER (When Problems Show Up)
In warmer months:
• Roots are actively growing
• They seek out water more aggressively
• Intrusions worsen faster
This is when most people start noticing symptoms—but it’s also when roots tend to come back quicker if not properly addressed.

SIGNS WE LOOK FOR
When diagnosing root issues, we often hear:
• “It was just one slow drain at first”
• “Now multiple drains are acting up”
• “It works fine… then suddenly it doesn’t”
• “We’ve had this problem before”
These patterns usually point to something deeper in the system.

NOT ALL ROOT REMOVAL IS THE SAME
One of the biggest misconceptions is that clearing the line once fixes the problem.
In reality:
• Some methods only open a temporary path through the roots
• Others fully clean the pipe and remove buildup
• Long-term solutions may involve treating or repairing the pipe
The right approach depends on what’s actually happening inside the line.

WHY WE RECOMMEND CAERA INSPECTIONS
Before deciding on a solution, we need to see what’s going on.
A camera inspection allows us to:
• Locate where roots are entering
• Determine the severity
• Check for pipe damage
This ensures the recommendation is accurate—not a guess.

OUR APPROACH AT RAPTOR PLUMBING & SEWER
We look at the full picture.
Not just clearing the immediate issue—but helping prevent the next one.
If you’ve had root intrusion before, there’s a strong chance it will return without a plan in place.

THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE ROOTS IN YOUR LINE?
We can run a quick camera inspection and show you exactly what’s going on—no guessing.
Early action can make all the difference between a simple service and a much larger repair.

Preparing Your Plumbing for Spring
Spring is the perfect time to give your home's plumbing system some much-needed attention after the winter months. Taking proactive steps now can help prevent future issues and ensure your plumbing is in top condition. Here are some essential spring plumbing tips to keep your system running smoothly.

1. Check for Leaks
Examine all visible pipes, faucets, and fixtures for any signs of leaks. Even a small leak can lead to significant water wastage and potential damage over time. Address any leaks promptly to avoid larger issues later.

2. Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Sprinklers
Freezing temperatures can cause outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems to crack. Turn on each faucet and sprinkler one at a time and check for any leaks or irregular water flow. Replace or repair any damaged components.

3. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Remove leaves, debris, and any other obstructions from your gutters and downspouts. Poor drainage can cause water to pool around your home's foundation, leading to potential water damage and plumbing issues.

4. Maintain the Water Heater
Flush your water heater to remove sediment buildup, which can reduce efficiency and shorten the lifespan of the unit. Additionally, check the temperature setting and ensure it remains at a safe and efficient level (around 120°F or 49°C).

5. Check the Sump Pump
If you have a sump pump, test it to ensure it's functioning correctly. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to see if the pump activates and properly discharges the water. Consider having a backup power source in place in case of power outages.

6. Inspect the Sewer System
Spring is an excellent time to have your sewer system inspected by a professional, especially if you experienced any backups or slow drains during the winter. Tree roots can infiltrate sewer lines, causing blockages and potential damage.

7. Check Washing Machine Hoses
Inspect the hoses connected to your washing machine for any signs of wear or damage. Hoses that are old or cracked can burst, causing significant water damage. Replace any questionable hoses with high-quality, braided stainless steel hoses.

8. Inspect Toilet Components
Check your toilet for any signs of leaks or issues. Ensure the flapper valve creates a tight seal and the fill valve is functioning correctly. Replace any worn or damaged parts to prevent water wastage.

Prepping your plumbing for spring can help you avoid unexpected repairs and ensure your system is ready for the warmer months ahead. By following these essential tips, you can maintain the integrity of your plumbing and enjoy a stress-free season.

How Can I Prevent Frozen Pipes During Winter?

Frozen pipes can burst—and that’s one of the most expensive winter plumbing emergencies. A few simple steps can make a big difference:

Here’s what to do:

Insulate exposed pipes (crawl spaces, garages, basements, exterior walls).

Let faucets drip during freezing nights—moving water is harder to freeze.

Open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air circulate around pipes.

Seal cold air leaks near pipes (caulk or weatherstrip).

Disconnect garden hoses and shut off exterior spigots.

Keep indoor heat consistent, even if you’re away.

Know your main shutoff valve—just in case.

If temps drop fast or you notice low water pressure, frost on pipes, or strange sounds, act quickly.

Stay warm, stay safe—and if you need help winterizing your plumbing, we’re here.

• Avoid using lower drains right away
• Watch for slow drainage or odors
• Clean and disinfect affected areas safely
• Schedule an inspection before mold or damage spreads
• Document damage for insurance if needed
Catching issues early saves time, money, and stress.
