Splitting your pre-emergent application into two rounds applied between Feb. and April can help to improve overall coverage and prevent breakthrough of annual weeds. While most people remember to do the first application, the second application is sometimes skipped or forgotten, leaving people to get late season summer annual weeds. If you choose to split your application into two rounds, don’t forget to apply that second round!

In the vegetable garden, February is the time for a number of chores which includes tilling the garden. When temperatures are cool the decomposition of organic matter is slower so early tilling of cover crops or weeds provides more time for the organic matter to decompose before spring planting. Poinsettias require proper light, water, and temperature conditions. During the holidays they typically enjoy semi-cool, humid locations in bright, indirect light with plenty of moisture. Poinsettia plants should be watered thoroughly.
If you choose to continue with poinsettia care after the holidays, decrease regular watering to allow the plant to dry out some. However, don’t let it dry out completely. Also, relocate the poinsettia plant to a cool, dark area until spring or around April.

Most of the cold weather is done and roses will benefit from pruning to remove weak and diseased limbs. Knockout roses can be pruned to maintain desired height.
