“Study hard so you don’t end up like us.”

That was the phrase first-generation Mexican-American student Leilani Fernandez Gonzalez says she grew up hearing from her immigrant family. But during her emotional graduation speech, she challenged the meaning behind those words by asking:

“Like what? Brave, selfless, hardworking?”

The powerful moment quickly went viral across social media as Leilani graduated as her school’s salutatorian with a 4.4 GPA and more than $1.6 million in scholarships.

During her speech, Leilani proudly honored her Mexican heritage and the sacrifices made by immigrant parents who work tirelessly to create better opportunities for their children. She also told the audience she wanted to prove that “a Mexican-American woman can break barriers and leave a mark.”
