Peaky’s plant pick this week: Penstemon! If you love snapdragons, but would like to have a perennial instead of annual, this is a great choice. Plus, it’s visited by both bees and hummingbirds!! Bonus: the foliage is evergreen so you don’t “lose” it in the winter:)

Best “bug” videos this week: 1. Osmia chalybea: metallic blue mason bee is host specialist on thistle. 2. Palamedes swallowtail caterpillar 🐛 on its host plant Swamp Bay. 3 Eight-spotted Forester Moth caterpillar 4. American Bumblebee on Beardtongue

I call this Spring Phlox bc it is the first phlox to bloom in my yard in the spring. I suspect it’s Phlox pilosa 🤷‍♀️ , but it is a true passalong plant that I brought from my childhood home in Georgia. We were given it by a neighbor… so who knows! I do know it’s drought-tolerant, blooms super early, goes kind of summer dormant, moves from place to place and (most importantly) seems to be a favorite of pollinating moths and flower flies! And it smells lovely ☺️ Peaky approved!
