What does the process of adding a home elevator actually look like? Here’s a look at the journey from planning to your first ride! 🛗
1️⃣ Determine your needs
Start by deciding which accessibility solution is right for you. That could be an elevator, stairlift, vertical platform lift, wheelchair lift, cargo lift, or another option. For elevators, you’ll also need to consider systems like traction, hydraulic, or winding drum.
2️⃣ Determine your project budget
Think about the full scope of your project. Are you planning for just the elevator equipment, or will your project also require construction, renovations, or a new elevator shaft?
3️⃣ Make sure your property can accommodate it
Survey setbacks, lot coverage, and local requirements can affect what you’re able to add. Your town’s planning department can help answer property-specific questions.
4️⃣ Select a builder
Choose a builder for the construction and permitting process, or determine if you plan to manage that portion yourself.
5️⃣ Begin construction & finalize selections
Once construction begins, measurements can be taken to order your elevator. This is also when you’ll finalize selections and submit the required deposit.
6️⃣ Plan for lead times
Elevators: approximately 4-8 weeks
Stairlifts: approximately 1-2 weeks
Vertical platform & wheelchair lifts: approximately 4-6 weeks
7️⃣ Installation
Once your elevator arrives and the site is ready, installation typically takes about 2-3 days.
8️⃣ Final inspection
Your completed elevator will go through the required final inspection with the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
9️⃣ Enjoy your elevator!
