This was a fun project that we completed last week. Known locally as the Peter Wise house, which was built in 1840 and originally sat in Doughty Valley between Berlin and Charm. The house was placed on the National Historic Registry in 1980 for being a prime example of Greek Revival Architecture in the midwest that was never modified or retrofitted for modern amenities such as plumbing or electric. It was also unique for be a gathering place for a Brethren congregation with a dividing wall upstairs for gender segregation.
The house was dismantled in 2008 where every single piece of the house was saved and placed in a broiler (chicken) house until last year when a young couple purchased it and began moving all the pieces to Western Holmes County to be risen again. We began the repairs this spring and started raising June.
We are very grateful to the Zemrock’s for the opportunity to do a local project, to do some creative joinery in the repair process, and providing extra hands when needed. To the D.L. Day Masonry company for their great work and flexibility, and of course Hawkins Lumber for procuring and milling some odd sized and high quality white oak timbers!
