🌿 NEXT YEAR’S GARDEN STARTS THIS FALL!
Getting your garden ready for fall? This is a great time to make room for Comfrey Bocking 14: a hardworking perennial you can grow for mulch, chop & drop, compost, and pollinators! 🐝
As summer heat eases here, planting comfrey gives it time to begin establishing before winter. Aim to give new plants several weeks before hard freezes, water during dry spells, and let them focus on roots instead of harvesting leaves right away.
Why add it to your garden?
🍃 Grow your own mulch: Once established, cut leaves and lay them around nearby plants to break down and return organic matter and nutrients to the soil.
✂️ Chop & drop: Cut established growth and leave it on the soil surface to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and feed the soil as it breaks down.
♻️ Feed your compost pile or chickens: Comfrey leaves make a useful green addition alongside dry leaves and other brown materials.
🐝 Support bees: Leave some stems to flower so visiting bees can enjoy the blooms.
🌱 Enjoy a returning perennial: The tops may die back in winter, but established plants return in spring.
Why Bocking 14? It’s a sterile variety that doesn’t spread by seed. Choose its permanent spot thoughtfully, though—root pieces left behind after digging can regrow!
Plant it this fall, let it settle in, and build toward a useful patch for the growing seasons ahead. 💚
