In today’s episode of ‘What a garden gnome is good for, “Removal of invasive species. I strive to help restore balance to the properties I work on. I dug up more than 100 Japanese barberry, by the roots. They are highly invasive in our area and harbor ticks.  Tomorrow the battle will continue.

Today I finished this project in High Falls, NY. This was a job I was particularly excited to start. I think it turned out really well. I got to work with some art deco gates that were salvaged from New York City and brought upstate 20 years ago to be the centerpieces of this garden. I was able to transform these bronze gates by adding picture framing around them (made of red cedar milled from a single tree). These pieces of bronze are beautifully showcased with their art deco patina. I enlarged the existing openings for the garden, creating gateways newly accessible for wheelbarrow and garden cart. I feel privileged to help them continue to live on. During this project, I replaced the picket fence with a Locust split rail fence and with 2x4 wire fencing. I also restored the side entrance to the house which needed to have wood replaced, mortar, stucco, and a new coat of paint. I look forward to seeing how the gates age and oxidize to a lovely gray when I return later this season to replace the front deck.

Some jobs are just hard work. Other jobs are full of creative opportunities for expression. The best jobs are when you get to help friends improve their lifes.
Improvement can take on many forms… this week’s endeavor succeeded in creating dry basement with access.
It may not be the most aesthetically beautiful thing we’ve ever built, but it’s work to be proud of nonetheless.  In this project, we installed a new sump pump basin, a pump system, and a curtain drain. We repaired the damaged block wall and stairs and replaced a wooden access door to create a safe and secure entry. We gave everything a fresh coat of paint.

Just got these amazing custom hats for my business. The design was inspired by this gnome made and painted by my grand aunt Ellie. She was an amazing slip cast ceramic artist. It’s so weird and beautiful how art inspires art.

Made with ironwood, rose of Sharon, citrine, amber, deer hide, and pearls.
A formidable magical weapon.
Powers unknown.
