Spring doesn’t arrive all at once. It builds.

South of Boston, flowering trees and shrubs like dogwood and azalea thrive in our coastal New England climate, where cooler springs and gradual warming allow for strong, consistent blooms.

Each layer plays a role. Early color gives way to structure and fullness, creating a landscape that evolves naturally through the season. Thoughtful plant selection is what makes that progression feel seamless.

With the official start of spring just days away, some of the season’s earliest blooms begin to emerge.

Magnolia buds, daffodils, and tulips respond first to warming temperatures, offering the initial color and structure that signal the season ahead.

A well-designed landscape builds on these early moments, layering blooms that carry through spring and into summer.

With the snow melting and the landscape slowly returning, it’s impossible not to start imagining the color that’s coming. Spring gardens don’t happen overnight. They begin with thoughtful planning, careful plant selection, and a vision for how the landscape will unfold through the season.

After a storm like this, it’s natural to wonder what will survive, what will bounce back, and what may be beyond repair. Heavy snow can strain branches, distort form, and expose underlying weaknesses in trees and shrubs.

The good news is that not everything that looks damaged is a loss. Some plants rebound beautifully once the snow melts, while others may need corrective pruning or replacement.

If you’re unsure what will recover and what may need attention, we’re here to help assess and strategize for the season ahead.

One month from now, the season officially turns. The landscapes that feel effortless in May are being carefully planned right now. Plant selection, layout, scale, and detail all take shape long before the first bloom appears.

This is the moment to think ahead, refine your vision, and prepare your outdoor spaces for what’s next.

Winter plays an important role in the health of a landscape. While everything appears quiet above ground, essential work is happening below the surface.
❄️
• Dormancy restores plants by conserving energy after the growing season
• Roots continue to strengthen in cool, insulated soil
• Cold temperatures reduce pests and disease naturally
• Snow and winter moisture protect soil and prevent deep freezing
• The pause supports healthier spring growth with less stress on plants

Winter gives the landscape time to reset, preparing it for stronger, more resilient growth when spring returns!

Anyone else missing blooming gardens this time of year?
❄️
The Christmas cactus is one of the few plants that puts on a show in winter, triggered by shorter days and cooler temperatures. Until the landscape wakes up again, this bright pink bloom is giving us a little inspiration.
