What to Do if Your Pipes Freeze

When the winter chill of this unusual Houston weather has set in, your water supply pipes can sometimes succumb to the bitter cold, leading to freezing and potential bursting. You’ve probably heard plenty of advice on how to prevent pipes from freezing, but what if your pipes have already turned into icy sculptures? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with some practical steps to help you thaw those frozen pipes and prevent further damage. By following these tips, you might just save yourself from a plumbing nightmare.

Shut Off the Water Main and Open the Faucets

The first step when dealing with frozen pipes is to act swiftly. Locate your water main and shut it offimmediately. This action will reduce the pressure within the frozen pipes and minimize the risk of flooding if they burst. If you’re planning to be away from home for an extended period during the cold season, this precaution is especially crucial.
Additionally, open any faucets connected to the affected pipe, but don’t turn them on full blast – just enough to allow the water to trickle out. This further alleviates the pressure within the pipes, helping to prevent potential bursting.

Safely Thaw the Frozen Pipe

If the frozen pipe is visible and accessible, you can attempt to thaw it safely. A hair dryer or a space heater can be your best friend in this situation. However, avoid using open flames as they can pose a fire hazard. Also, make sure to keep space heaters a safe distance away from walls and any flammable materials.
Gradually apply heat to the frozen section of the pipe until you notice water flowing again. This process might take some time, so be patient and avoid using excessive heat, which could damage the pipe.

Inspect for Leaks

Even with the water main turned off, there may still be enough residual pressure to reveal any leaks once the frozen pipe has thawed. Take the time to inspect the exposed pipes for any signs of leakage. Identifying leaks early can help you prevent further damage to your plumbing system.

Call a Professional Plumber

While you can take some initial steps to address frozen pipes, it’s essential to call in a professional plumber equipped with the necessary pipe-repair equipment. They have the expertise to safely and effectively make the necessary repairs to the damaged pipes. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help from a licensed plumber when needed, as attempting complex repairs on your own or with a local handyman can lead to more costly problems.

Consider Pipe Replacement

Even if you find no visible leaks, it’s a good idea to have a plumber inspect pipes that have endured a hard freeze. The extreme cold can cause the pipe material to stretch and weaken, making it vulnerable to future failures. In such cases, your plumber may recommend replacing the affected pipes to ensure the long-term integrity of your plumbing system.

Keep in mind that when frozen pipes thaw, they may start spewing water inside walls if the pipe has burst. This sudden flooding can result in significant property damage. Many plumbing companies, like GAP Plumbing, can refer a water restoration service company to help you.

Don’t let frozen pipes freeze you in your tracks this winter. By taking these proactive steps and seeking professional assistance when needed, you can safeguard your home from the havoc of burst pipes. Remember, prevention and quick action are your best allies in keeping your plumbing system in top shape.

Frozen Pipes - Before, After & If You Experience Damage

Even in Texas, weather stations often predict a hard freeze for Houston and surrounding areas. This means temperatures will drop to freezing or below several days in a row. Many homeowners are asking, “How can I prevent frozen and broken water pipes?”

Why Do Pipes Freeze and Break During a Cold Spell?

When temperatures drop below freezing, water freezes and expands. A gallon of water will expand to a volume of 9% greater than that of the original gallon. The expanding water in your home’s water lines causes the pipes in your home to crack or burst under this pressure and possibly flood your home or business. Pipes that freeze first are generally located near outside walls or in unfinished areas of your home where they can be exposed to the subfreezing temperatures. Outdoor hose bibs, pool lines, indoor and outdoor sprinkler systems, and other supply lines located in crawl spaces, garages, or attics are especially susceptible.
