AC coil freezing cycles can quickly turn a minor airflow or refrigerant problem into a complete loss of cooling—especially during a hot, humid Greater Houston summer. Your air conditioner’s evaporator coil is supposed to become cold enough to absorb heat from the air passing through your system, but it should never become covered in frost or solid ice. When the coil’s temperature drops below freezing, moisture collecting on its surface begins to freeze.
As the ice thickens, airflow becomes increasingly restricted, cooling performance declines, and your AC may run continuously without making your home comfortable. You might notice weak airflow, warm air from the vents, water near the indoor unit, or ice buildup on the AC unit’s refrigerant lines. Although turning the system off can thaw frozen evaporator coils, thawing only addresses the immediate ice—not the underlying cause.
