It is about time someone started trying to catch these guys. These door knocking "roofing" companies have been doing this for quite some time.
I have been saying for years that this is only going to drive up everyone's insurance premiums and make it more difficult for homeowners to get the assistance that they need from the their insurance company when they have legitimate damage.
We actually ran across one of these situations a few weeks ago. A homeowner called our company after being approached by a door knocker that offered a "free roof inspection". She wanted a 2nd opion of a ligitimate, trusted, local company that has been serving the area for many years.
Upon our inspection of her roof we did not find any wind or hail damage, only normal wear and tear for the age of the roof. There were a some very minor thermal cracking that is normal when shingles start reaching the end of their lifespan, but all of the shingles were still sealed.
The homeowner had already agreed for the door knocker to meet the adjuster since they were the ones that told her to file a claim with her insurance carrier. This door knocker wanted to arrive an hour before the insurance adjuster so he could "mark the damage on the roof". We went back out and hour or 2 after the adjuster and the door knocker had left to see what damage was marked. Sure enough their were multiple shingles of the shingles with the thermal cracking that were still sealed a week prior were all unsealed now. We showed the homeowner before and after proof of how untrustworthy this "door knocking roofing company" was. She advised her insurance company of what we had found and her claim was still approved. However she had our company replace her roof instead of the shady door knocking company that vandalized her roof in an attempt to profit off of her insurance company.
It is not a good idea to let some random stranger that comes knocking on your door access the roof of your home, ESPECIALLY if they're not local or if they claim to be local but you have never heard of them. Occasionally if we are replacing a roof and see a neighbor has some damage then we may approach them to let them know what we saw and offer our assistance. But when it is just some random strangers walking the neighborhood knocking every door it is best to send them on their way.
Over the past few years I have seen more and more of these "door knocking roofing" companies in my own neighborhood from everywhere, Raliegh, Charlotte. Wilson, Fayetville and Wake Forrest. It is always best to use a trusted local company to work on your home, someone who stands behind the quality of their workmanship and will be there if you ever have any issues. Please beware and do your do diligence before trusting some random stranger with your largest investment, your home.
Investigators with the Department of Insurance walked WRAL 5 On Your Side through a video from an active investigation, demonstrating alleged roofing fraud in the act.
