Everyone in this business says they are the best. Here is what we actually put in writing before you sign anything.

Thirteen years of warranty. The standard ten, plus three more from us.

The quote is the price. Valid 60 days. No hidden extras, no add-ons discovered halfway through the job.

Two years of maintenance included, with a manager-audited commissioning checklist, so the system is set up properly rather than just switched on.

Anything tied to our workmanship, we fix free, for the lifetime of the system.

And one year after install, if you are not satisfied, we refund every dollar and remove the system.

Plus up to $10,400 in Eastside heat pump rebates. Already have a quote from us? It still stands, and we will take another 5% off it.

The rebate stops at the lake.

Energy Smart Eastside covers six cities. Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish and Mercer Island. Cross the water and it simply does not exist.

Within those six, the utility rebate and the federal credit stack to as much as $10,400 toward a heat pump. For a house still running an old furnace, that is the number that turns repair-or-replace from a close call into an easy one.

Most people living in these cities have never heard of the program. That is the only reason the money is still sitting there.

We will look at your home, work out exactly what it qualifies for, and put the numbers in writing. No charge for the visit.

Two minutes in the garage tells you something genuinely useful.

Every water heater has a manufacturer’s plate on the side, and somewhere on it is the date it was made. Some print it directly. On most others it is encoded in the serial number, often in the first few digits as a month and year or a week and year.

The format varies between manufacturers, so if yours is not obvious, take a photo of the label and send it to us. We can read it.

Why it matters: most tanks last somewhere between 8 and 12 years. Past that you are not really deciding whether to replace it, you are deciding whether you replace it on a Tuesday afternoon or at 11pm on a Sunday with water across the garage floor.

While you are down there, two more things. Look for rust or staining around the base, and check whether the floor around it is dry. A little moisture is worth mentioning. A puddle is worth a call today.

If yours is around ten years or older, it is worth getting an estimate while there is no urgency attached. $300 off any water heater at the moment, tank or tankless, up to 50 gallons on qualifying systems.

Space heaters came out of the cupboard this weekend. Worth knowing what one actually asks of your wiring.

A typical portable heater is 1,500 watts, which at 120 volts is about 12 and a half amps. A standard 15 amp household circuit is rated to carry 12 amps continuously.

So one heater, on its own, is already slightly above what that circuit is designed to run all evening. Add a lamp, a television and a few chargers on the same circuit and you are asking it to do something it was never sized for.

Three rules cover most of it.

Plug it straight into a wall outlet. Not an extension cord, not a power strip. Those are not built for a sustained draw like this and it is the most common cause of heater problems.

Give it a circuit mostly to itself. If the breaker trips while the heater is running, that is not a faulty breaker. That is the breaker doing exactly what it is there to do.

Touch the plug after an hour. If the plug or the outlet face feels warm, unplug it and stop using that outlet. Warm usually means a loose connection, and that is worth having looked at properly.

Cardinal is licensed for electrical as well as heating and air. Breaker tripping, outlet running warm, or you are not sure what is on which circuit, give us a call.

It got properly cold this weekend and a lot of people found out their heat was not keeping up. Before you call anyone, pull your filter out and hold it up to a window.

That is what one looks like after a summer of sitting there. Barely any light getting through, which means barely any air getting through either. A blocked filter makes the system work harder, and in some cases it overheats and shuts itself down on a safety limit. From the hallway that looks exactly like a broken furnace.

Two other things worth checking while you are there.

Make sure the thermostat is actually set to Heat, not Auto and not Cool. Nobody has touched that switch since spring and it is the most common reason a furnace does not come on in October.

Make sure the furnace access panel is properly shut. Most units have a safety switch that will not let them run with the door open, and even a small gap stops it.

When you put the new filter in, the arrow on the frame points toward the furnace, not away from it.

If all three check out and it still will not run, something has failed and it will not fix itself. Give us a call.

Ten minutes this weekend saves a genuinely bad morning in January.

If a garden hose is still attached to an outdoor tap when the temperature drops, water sits in the line with nowhere to go. It freezes, it expands, and the split usually happens inside the wall rather than at the tap. You often do not find out until spring when you turn the water on and it comes out somewhere it should not.

Three things, in order.

Disconnect every hose. All of them, including the one at the side of the house you forget about.

Open the tap and let the line drain, then close it again.

Put an insulated cover on. They cost a few dollars at any hardware shop and they take about four seconds to fit.

If you have a frost-free spigot you are in better shape, but it still needs the hose off.

The frost-free part only works when the line can drain.

Anything looking stiff, dripping or already damaged, give us a call while it is still a small job.

You turn the heat on for the first time all year and the house smells faintly like something burning. Most people assume something is wrong.

Usually nothing is. Your furnace has been sitting idle since March and a thin layer of dust has settled on the heat exchanger. The first time it fires, that dust burns off. It smells for an hour or two and then it stops.

What is worth paying attention to is if it does not stop. A burning smell that lingers past the first couple of cycles, or a sharp acrid smell rather than a dusty one, is worth a phone call rather than a wait and see.

While you are at it, check your filter. If it has been in since spring it is doing more harm than good.

Questions about anything your heating system is doing this month, give us a call.

Heat pump. EV charger. Induction range.

Three things a lot of Eastside households are adding right now, and all three pull from the same electrical panel. A panel that, in most homes built before about 2000, was sized for a house that had none of them.

This is the part that catches people out. You get a quote for a heat pump, everything is agreed, and then partway through the job it turns out the panel cannot take the load. Now you are waiting on an electrician and the project has grown.

The fix is boring and it works. Have the panel assessed before you order equipment, not after. A load calculation takes very little time and it tells you whether you are installing one thing or two.

Cardinal is licensed for electrical as well as heating and air, so we can check it on the same visit and price it on the same estimate. No second contractor.
