Our Seattle DADU is taking its shape. It is not always about square footage. This 1000 Sf, two-bedroom, two-bathroom dwelling feels much larger. The high ceilings and open floor plan create the spacious airy living space. With recent WA State Zoning Code changes, units of this size will become more common. Let’s hope the missing middle housing will get the boost it deserves together with the more affordable price tag.

One of the most common mistakes while selecting tile is made when choosing wrong tile size. Often small tiles are associated with small scale spaces. We feel it should be totally opposite. Big strokes will make the space more prominent, add more interest and make it feel like on steroids. This small bathroom is adorned with larger tile with, organic, distinctive yet subtle pattern giving the sense of movement. The simple color pallet provides a perfect background for this calming, spa-like little bathroom. The large mirror blurs the boundaries of the space and makes it even larger.

Bigger is not always better. Often smaller spaces present challenge but also an opportunity to create something different end unique. A creative, well-designed space can be as functional as a larger space however often may feel more comfortable, cozy, and personal, the qualities associated with family living.

The movement created with the custom-built triangular base cabinet provides not only needed storage space but also interlocked volumes and contrasted materials create a focal point and perception of larger space.

Accessible bathrooms or baths for ageing in place don’t need to look like hospital facilities. This bathroom feels like a spa and yet meets all requirements for ADA accessibility; the collapsible water retainer shower dam for easy shower access, grab bars, shower seat, etc. The grab bars are designed to provide dual function as a toilet paper holder and/or product holder disguising their primary function while creating safe but also aesthetically pleasing environment.
As the life expectancy is getting longer and ageing in place becoming more common, creating welcoming and safe environments is taking more important part within the program requirements.

Gates are the first expressions of what lies beyond a public face of a home… they are an interlude to the private spaces hidden behind. Why not make them interesting, intriguing and welcoming.
