Back at it, down in Houston, to do a landscape deep dive with our client and strategize how to bring the most value to a development through landscape and thoughtful planning and design. We visited some new installations at Memorial Park and are gathering up many lessons learned as we move into future phases of design.

Also, nothing like seeing spring green grass and flowers holding on from fall!

Kicking off a new riverbank and tributary stream restoration project down in Knoxville today. It might look a little dreary, but it sure felt like spring!

Integrating research into practice, one soil core at a time. What a beautiful fall day to get muddy studying soils at our project site! There was a great variety to explore, from the upland prairie, to the ag field to the wetland edge. Soil texture, biology and structure are all important components of the plant communities we restore and overall ecological health.

The heat broke and the rain finally came, bringing with it a flush of new growth, erosion and invasive species! Restoration techniques that have worked in one place or at one time are constantly challenged by varying site conditions, soils or weather patterns, so adaptive management is key. I see some slope repair, overseeding and spot spraying/mowing in this young prairie’s future. Can you ID the last plant? Hint: it is more prevalent further south but can still be invasive in the Midwest.

We work at the interface of people and plants. Thoughtful infrastructure can create beautiful, comfortable places for people while also functioning as an ecological corridor and hotspot of biodiversity.

Back in Houston checking out construction of a new bridge over a canal and plant establishment at some large, naturalized detention basins.

Now, back to Chicago to keep design moving ahead ✈️

Met with The Nature Conservancy today to see some of their remnant and restoration areas and help give feedback on their signage system. We always love a mid-week escape from the office and a chance to see some of Piet Oudolf’s original inspiration for the Lurie Garden 🌸

Nothing can replace breaking out the xylene markers and a long roll of trace paper.

Working on some early concepts for a large property restoration and homestead. This is going to be a fun one to see take shape in the years ahead.

Grandfather’s Lake is 20’ deep and designed with fish habitat structures like this root wad. Now those root wads are under water and we are working on vegetating the slopes with native plants of the coastal prairie. Even the concrete block weir overflow for this stormwater pond is covered in native plants - check out that buffalograss lawn!

Helped to kick off the CFC seed collecting season gathering Spiderwort and Cow parsnip this morning. We also had a farmhouse chat with this summer's CFC interns, discussing the work we do and touring them around a few local projects. And just look at that purple prairie clover lining the trail into the prairie!

Visiting Sheldon Lake State Park to hear about native prairie restoration efforts, learn which strategies worked best, and begin to build ties to improve restoration outcomes for all. Exciting times in the gulf coast prairie ecoregion!

Please welcome Amy Roberts to the Indigo team! She is a recent grad from the landscape architecture program at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and hit the ground running with us a few weeks ago. Amy has a passion for native plants and the insects they support. She also loves gaming in her free time so I am sure she is going to school us on graphics and 3D rendering in the near future 🙃. We are thrilled to be able to grow our practice and hope to continue to in the future!
