This area is just east of us over the mountains although we do have many of the same frogs and toads. How many do you recognize?

We love being outside working in the soil with trees, shrubs, and perennials. There are so many interesting things to see through the seasons. Color change, leaf growth, insects, fungi, wildlife, and so on. But in the winter the skies can be so beautiful!

In our area, winter is a great time to plant shrubs and trees. The cool to cold weather gives the plants a chance to set and spread their roots before the hot, dry weather of summer arrives. They don’t need to be watered quite as often, as the ground stays wetter longer after a rain. Also, if the plant is deciduous, it isn’t trying to feed its leaves with nutrients and moisture and can focus on root growth.
