Most of the clog calls we run start with a wipe.

The label means it fits through the toilet, not that it breaks down after. It leaves your house whole and stays whole in the bend under your house, in the main line to the street, or in the city's system, and somebody's paying to get it out. Here's the test that actually matters: put one in a jar of water and shake it. If it's still a wipe an hour later, that's what your pipes are dealing with.

When we walk into a kitchen for a service call, we're looking at five things before we look at the reason you called.

The floor of the cabinet under the sink, warping or a swollen bottom board tells us there's been a leak longer than the homeowner realized. The angle stops behind the cabinet wall, corroded or stuck ones become a repair before anything else. The disposal, half the "disposal problems" we get called for aren't the disposal. The faucet base from underneath, a wobbly handle almost always starts there, not at the top.

The moment a plumber calls a job done is the moment you have to trust them.

Before we pack up, we run the water, flush the toilet, cycle the valve, whatever the job was, we make you watch it work. If something's still off, we're still there, tools out, before the truck moves. Catching it in the driveway is a different job than catching it after we've gone.

The pipes that freeze in January are the ones nobody thought about in August.

Walk your basement, crawlspace, or garage this weekend and look for pipes touching an exterior wall, pipes running through an unheated space, or pipes already sweating in the humidity. Those are the ones. Foam sleeves from the hardware store are a few dollars a length, and a Saturday morning now is cheaper than a burst pipe at 6 a.m. on the coldest day of the year.

Most homeowners find out a repair wasn't done well the second time it fails. There are things to check before you get there.

Open the cabinet the next morning and run your hand along every fitting the plumber touched, dry means dry, not "mostly dry." Ask them to run the fixture at full pressure before they pack up, not just turn it on to check. And you should be able to tell someone what got fixed, in your own words, before the truck pulls away.
